Maya looked down.

“And you're not?”

Cole gave her a brief glance.

“I've been scared before.”

That was all he said.

They drove to a small motel several miles outside town. Cole stayed outside while Maya checked in. He didn't ask for her room number. He didn't ask for money. He simply waited until she was safely inside.

Before closing the door, Maya looked back at him.

“Why are you helping me?”

Cole shrugged.

“Because someone should.”

She smiled faintly.

For the first time that night, her eyes looked less frightened.

“Goodnight, Cole.”

He paused.

“You know my name?”

She pointed toward his motorcycle.

His name was written on a small club patch sewn into the side of his riding jacket.

Maya smiled.

“Goodnight.”

Cole turned to leave.

His phone vibrated.

Unknown number.

He answered.

There was silence.

Then a man's voice.

“You should've kept riding.”

Cole looked toward Maya's motel room.

His expression changed.

The call ended.

He lowered the phone.

Across the parking lot, a pair of headlights appeared.

Cole stared at them.

The vehicle didn't move.

Neither did he.

The next morning, Maya found something taped beneath her motel door.

A photograph.

It showed Cole standing outside the motel the previous night.

Someone had been watching them.

On the back of the photograph was a single sentence:

“Now you both know too much.”

Maya immediately called Cole.

He answered on the first ring.

“Where are you?”

She looked through the curtains.

“Someone found me.”

Cole was silent for a second.

Then his voice became calm.

“Lock the door. Don't open it for anyone.”

Maya swallowed.

“Cole...”

“I'm coming.”

And for the first time, Maya realized the stranger who had stopped to help her at a gas station had just become the only person she could trust.
