The Success She Stole

The Lie That Came Back

Working overtime
Emma and Sophia joined Harrison Fashion House on the same day, carrying the same dream of becoming recognized designers in New York’s fashion world. At first, they were friends. They worked late together, shared ideas, and promised that one day they would succeed side by side.

But as the years passed, people began to notice Sophia more.

Her designs were elegant, emotional, and unforgettable. Clients requested her collections, coworkers admired her, and even the CEO often praised her talent during meetings.

Every compliment Sophia received felt like a wound in Emma’s heart.

She was talented too, but talent was no longer enough. She wanted the recognition, the admiration, and the position that always seemed to move closer to Sophia and farther from herself.

Jealousy did not appear overnight. It grew quietly from comparisons, from applause meant for someone else, and from the fear of always being second.

Then came the announcement that changed everything.

The company was opening a new branch in Paris, and the new Creative Director would lead the entire international project. Everyone knew there were only two real candidates.

Emma.

And Sophia.

That night, Emma stayed alone in the office. As she walked past Sophia’s desk, she noticed that her laptop was still open.

On the screen was Sophia’s newest collection — the project that could secure her promotion.

Emma stood there for a long time.

Then she slowly closed the office door.

The room was silent except for the sound of rain against the windows. Emma inserted a USB drive into the computer, and the design files began to copy one by one.

Her hands trembled.

“Just this once,” she whispered.

A moment later, she opened a hidden folder and created a series of fake emails that made it appear as if Sophia had sent the confidential designs to a competing brand.

When everything was finished, Emma stared at the screen and said softly, “Tomorrow, everyone will believe Sophia betrayed the company.”

Before leaving, she noticed a photo of the two of them taken on their first day at work.

For a second, guilt crossed her face.

Then she turned away.

In that moment, she did not just steal a collection. She stole the future of someone who had once trusted her.

The next morning, Emma walked into the CEO’s office with a worried expression.

“Mr. Anderson, I think something serious has happened.”

The CEO looked up. “What is it?”

Emma placed the printed emails on his desk.

“I found evidence that our designs were sent outside the company.”

The CEO’s face hardened when he saw the sender’s name.

Sophia Hartwell.

Sophia was called into the conference room. The moment she saw Emma sitting there, she sensed something was wrong.

“We have evidence that confidential company designs were leaked,” the CEO said.

Sophia froze. “That’s impossible. I would never do that.”

“The emails were sent from your account.”

Sophia turned to Emma, her eyes searching for an explanation.

“Emma… you know this isn’t true, don’t you?”

Emma said nothing.

That silence hurt more than any accusation.

Sophia was fired that same day.

She packed her belongings while coworkers avoided her gaze. As she reached the elevator, she stopped in front of Emma.

“I don’t know why you did this,” she said quietly. “But I hope one day you understand what it feels like to lose everything because of someone else’s lie.”

Then she walked away.

A week later, Emma became the new Creative Director.

She had the office, the title, the salary, and the success she had always wanted.

Everyone congratulated her.

She had won.

Five years passed.

Emma became one of the most celebrated designers in New York. Her face appeared in magazines, she attended exclusive fashion events, and people called her an inspiration.

But every time she saw a truly beautiful design, she thought of Sophia.

And every time she remembered that rainy night, a small part of her wondered whether the life she was living had ever really belonged to her.

Then a new CEO took over the company.

He ordered a full review of old projects and security records. Deleted files were recovered, login histories restored, and archived backups examined.

What the investigators discovered shocked everyone.

The fake emails had been created from Emma’s computer.

The copied files had been transferred using her USB drive.

The woman who had accused Sophia was the one who had framed her.

Emma was called into the boardroom.

“The investigation is complete,” the CEO said.

Emma crossed her arms. “Then you know I was right about Sophia.”

Without a word, he placed a folder on the table.

Inside were the recovered records.

Emma’s expression changed.

“That’s impossible.”

“All the evidence leads to you,” the CEO replied.

Emma stood up abruptly. “Sophia set me up! She wanted revenge!”

The room remained silent.

“Even now, you still blame her?” the CEO asked.

Emma’s voice rose. “If she hadn’t tried to take my position, none of this would have happened!”

The CEO looked at her coldly.

“No, Emma. Sophia lost her future because of your lie. And today, you are losing everything because of the truth.”

Emma was dismissed immediately.

As she walked out of the building carrying a small box of personal belongings, she realized she was following the exact path Sophia had walked five years earlier.

Rain was falling again.

And across the street stood Sophia.

No longer the woman who had been fired in disgrace, she was now the founder of a successful fashion brand, respected by employees and admired by clients.

Emma approached her slowly.

“Sophia…”

Sophia looked at her calmly.

“I’m sorry,” Emma whispered.

For the first time in years, there was no anger left in her voice.

“I was jealous. I was afraid of losing. I destroyed someone who never tried to hurt me.”

Sophia was silent for a long moment.

Then she said, “Five years ago, you took away my dream. But I refused to let your lie decide my life.”

Emma lowered her head as tears mixed with the rain.

And in that moment, she finally understood that the greatest punishment was not losing her job, her title, or her reputation.

It was realizing that she had spent five years protecting a success that had never truly been hers.

“A lie may help you win for a moment. But the truth never disappears. It waits quietly for the day it finally returns.”
