The Trip of Betrayal

The Trip That Was Built on Lies

“I’m changing the destination,” Laura said softly.

Tuh looked up from his laptop.

“What do you mean? We already booked Bali.”

“I cancelled the hotel.”

He stared at her for a second, as if he had misheard.

“You cancelled the resort in Bali?”

“Yes.”

“Laura, our flight is in three days.”

“I know.”

The apartment fell silent. Tuh slowly closed his laptop.

“This isn’t about Bali, is it?”

Laura looked at him for a long moment.

“No. It isn’t.”

Laura and Tuh had been together for almost four years. To everyone around them, they looked like the perfect couple.

Laura worked as an editor for a travel magazine. She loved quiet places, rainy mornings, and trips that had no schedule.

Tuh was a project manager at a technology company. He liked things to be clear, on time, and under control. Every trip came with a spreadsheet, a budget, and a backup plan.

Their differences had once attracted them to each other.

But over time, Laura began to feel that she was living in a relationship that was being managed rather than loved.

That summer, Tuh prepared the Bali trip with unusual enthusiasm.

A beachfront resort in Seminyak. A Nusa Penida island tour. Snorkeling. A sunset photoshoot. Restaurants booked in advance.

He even created a file called “Bali 2026 – Final Version.”

Laura looked at the packed itinerary and laughed.

“You forgot to schedule time for breathing.”

Tuh laughed too, not realizing that she was no longer joking.

Two nights before the flight, Tuh fell asleep on the couch with his laptop still open.

Laura walked over to close it for him.

Then she saw the email notification.

From: Mia Tran

Subject: Can’t wait for Bali ❤️

She opened it.

“Good thing your girlfriend still thinks this is a group trip. See you in Bali.”

Laura read it again and again.

Her heart started pounding so hard it hurt.

But she did not wake Tuh.

She did not cry.

She sat on the balcony until dawn, then opened a booking app and reserved a small guesthouse in Kyoto.

When Laura asked about Mia, Tuh denied everything immediately.

“You’re misunderstanding this.”

“Then help me understand.”

“She’s a former colleague. We only texted.”

“Then why did she say I don’t know the truth?”

Tuh said nothing.

That silence hurt Laura more than a confession would have.

They still went to Kyoto.

Not because they had solved anything, but because neither of them wanted to stay in that apartment for another minute.

Kyoto welcomed them with rain and fog. The guesthouse was small and quiet, with sliding paper doors, a stone garden, and the soft sound of running water.

No pool.

No buffet.

No itinerary.

For three days, they barely spoke.

Laura walked alone along the Kamogawa River.

Tuh kept picking up his phone and putting it down whenever she looked at him.

The quieter Kyoto became, the louder the distance between them felt.

On the third night, Tuh made tea and finally spoke.

“I never met Mia.”

Laura looked at him carefully.

“Really?”

“I texted her. I liked the attention. I know that was wrong, but I never physically cheated on you.”

His voice sounded tired, and for the first time Laura began to wonder if this could still be a misunderstanding.

Maybe she had reacted too strongly.

Maybe this was only emotional stupidity, not betrayal.

That night, for the first time in days, she fell asleep.

At three in the morning, Laura woke up to the vibration of Tuh’s phone.

He was in the shower.

The screen lit up beside her.

Mia is calling (video).

Laura stared at it.

The call ended.

Then a message appeared.

“Are you with her? I thought you were finally going to tell Laura the truth in Bali.”

Another message followed.

“I’ve already changed my ticket for next week. We can’t keep hiding this forever.”

Laura felt the blood drain from her face.

With trembling hands, she opened the chat.

Months of conversations.

Hotel screenshots.

Flight confirmations.

Messages that said:

  • “I wish I were the one traveling with you.”

  • “We’ll have our own Bali.”

  • “Laura would never understand.”

She could not keep reading.

The bathroom door opened.

Tuh stepped out and froze when he saw the phone in her hand.

Neither of them spoke for several seconds.

Then Laura asked quietly,

“So this is what you call not cheating on me?”

Tuh opened his mouth, but no explanation came.

For the first time since she had known him, he looked completely powerless.

“Laura, let me explain—”

“Explain what? That you planned to go to Bali with her after coming to Kyoto with me?”

He said nothing.

And that silence became the answer.

Laura put on her coat, grabbed her bag, and walked out into the rain.

Kyoto was still asleep.

Her phone kept vibrating.

Tuh called once.

Then ten times.

Then twenty.

She did not answer.

Near dawn, Laura sat alone in a small café by Kyoto Station, watching rain slide down the window.

What hurt her most was no longer Mia.

It was the realization that Tuh had made her question her own instincts, made her wonder if she was being paranoid, insecure, or overly sensitive.

For months, she had been trying to save a relationship that only one of them was truly staying in.

By noon, she returned to the guesthouse to collect her suitcase.

Tuh was still there, sitting motionless beside the low wooden table.

He looked at her as if he wanted to say something.

Laura stopped at the door.

“I used to think the best part of a trip was being with the person you love.”

She placed the key on the table.

“Now I understand that the best part of this trip was doing nothing.”

Tuh looked up.

Laura smiled, but there were no tears left in her eyes.

“Because we weren’t busy following a schedule, taking photos, or pretending to be happy. And that’s why I finally saw the truth.”

She pulled her suitcase toward the door.

Outside, the rain kept falling over the quiet streets of Kyoto.

And for the first time in a very long time, Laura no longer wanted to save the trip.

She only wanted to save herself.
