There is a button on the washing machine that if turned on, the clothes will be cleaner and last longer, but many people still don't know about it.

If you activate this feature when using the washing machine, your family’s clothes will not only be cleaner but will also retain their color and durability for much longer.

In modern life, the washing machine has become an indispensable appliance in every household. However, not everyone knows how to make full use of its functions. In fact, many people only use the machine with basic modes such as “Normal Wash,” “Spin,” or “Quick Wash,” while ignoring small buttons that can significantly improve washing quality and extend the lifespan of clothes.

One of the most overlooked buttons is the “Pre-wash” mode (sometimes labeled as “Soak” on certain models). This button is usually tucked away on the control panel, sometimes represented by a small symbol that users easily miss. However, once activated, this function allows clothes to be treated before the main wash cycle. As a result, stubborn stains such as mud, sweat, and grease are softened or partially removed, helping clothes come out cleaner without the need for repeated washing.

Home appliance experts point out that the habit of washing directly without using “Pre-wash” is one of the reasons why clothes wear out quickly. When dirt is not pre-treated, the washing machine has to use stronger spinning force to remove it, which causes fabric fibers to fray, fade, or stretch. Meanwhile, using the “Pre-wash” mode reduces the load on the main cycle, ensuring clothes are not only cleaner but also better able to maintain their shape and color over time.

Not only that, this small button also provides great hygienic benefits. During the pre-wash process, the machine often uses extra water and sometimes higher temperatures (depending on the model), which helps significantly reduce bacteria, mold, and unpleasant odors. This is especially important for children’s clothes, sports uniforms, or bedding that requires higher hygiene standards.

The fact is, many families don’t even know this function exists, or they assume it’s unnecessary and wastes water and electricity. In reality, the additional consumption is minimal compared to the benefits. A “Pre-wash” cycle usually lasts only about 15–20 minutes but greatly improves washing quality.

In addition to “Pre-wash,” some modern washing machines also include other auxiliary functions such as “Extra Rinse” or “Steam.” These are also often overlooked but play a role in protecting both clothes and skin. With “Extra Rinse,” clothes are rinsed more thoroughly to remove all detergent residue, making it ideal for people with sensitive skin. Meanwhile, the steam function helps soften fabric, reduce wrinkles, and eliminate bacteria more effectively.

Experts recommend that to use washing machines effectively, consumers should take a little time to carefully read the manufacturer’s instructions. Each button has a specific purpose and can help save considerable costs on repairs and clothing replacements. Moreover, combining the modes properly provides the best results — clothes that are not only cleaner but also safer for health.

In the context of rising living costs, making the most of available features on household appliances is not just a small money-saving tip, but also a way to improve overall quality of life.
