Chapter 3: How to Treat Cold Sores and Speed Up Recovery
Most cold sores heal naturally, but treatment can reduce discomfort and, in some cases, shorten the duration of an outbreak.
Antiviral medications are the main medical treatments for herpes simplex infections. Common examples include acyclovir, valacyclovir, and famciclovir. Depending on the severity and frequency of symptoms, a healthcare professional may recommend oral medication or a topical antiviral product.
Oral antiviral medicines are often more effective than topical products, particularly for people who experience significant or frequent outbreaks. Treatment generally offers the greatest benefit when started during the early tingling stage rather than after the blisters have fully developed.
These medicines suppress viral replication but do not eliminate HSV-1 from the body. The virus remains dormant in nerve cells, which means future outbreaks are still possible.
People who experience frequent or particularly troublesome recurrences may benefit from discussing preventive antiviral therapy with a clinician. Whether this approach is appropriate depends on individual circumstances, outbreak frequency, and medical history.
Simple measures can also improve comfort while the sore heals. A clean, cool compress may soothe the affected area. Drinking enough fluids and choosing foods that are easy to eat can help if the lips or mouth are painful.
Avoid peeling crusts, squeezing blisters, or repeatedly touching the affected skin. Wash your hands after applying treatment and avoid touching your eyes, because herpes infection involving the eye can threaten vision.
Some people use a plain protective lip ointment to reduce dryness and cracking. If sunlight triggers outbreaks, a broad-spectrum lip balm with SPF protection may help reduce recurrences associated with sun exposure.
Be cautious with home remedies. Applying alcohol, concentrated essential oils, toothpaste, or other irritating substances can damage sensitive skin and make the area more uncomfortable. Such products have not been established as reliable cures for cold sores.
If you have a weakened immune system, severe symptoms, or a lesion near the eye, seek medical advice promptly rather than relying on home treatment alone.
