Do not rely on energy drinks, supplements, or so-called liver detox products to treat unexplained fatigue. Some products marketed for detoxification can cause harm, including liver injury.

2. Yellowing of the Skin or Eyes

Yellowing of the whites of the eyes or skin is known as jaundice. It occurs when bilirubin, a yellow substance produced during the normal breakdown of red blood cells, accumulates in the body.

Jaundice can develop when the liver cannot process bilirubin effectively, when bile flow is blocked, or when bilirubin production increases for other reasons. Possible causes include hepatitis, certain forms of liver injury, and obstruction of the bile ducts.

New yellowing of the eyes or skin requires prompt medical assessment. It should not be dismissed as ordinary tiredness or a cosmetic change.

Jaundice can have several causes, some of which require urgent treatment. If it occurs with severe abdominal pain, fever, confusion, repeated vomiting, or marked weakness, seek emergency medical care.

3. Dark Urine

Urine that becomes unusually dark, particularly when it resembles tea or cola, can sometimes be associated with elevated bilirubin. This may occur when the liver or bile ducts are affected.

However, dark urine does not automatically indicate liver disease. Dehydration can make urine more concentrated, while foods, supplements, and some medications may also change its color.

The pattern and accompanying symptoms matter. Dark urine that persists despite normal hydration, especially when accompanied by pale stools, yellowing of the eyes, itching, or abdominal discomfort, deserves medical attention.

If the change is sudden and unexplained, contact a healthcare professional rather than assuming that dehydration is the cause.

4. Pale or Clay-Colored Stools

Bile helps give stool its usual brown color. When bile cannot flow normally into the intestine, stools may become unusually pale, gray, or clay-colored.

This change can occur with certain liver and bile duct conditions, including blockages that interfere with bile flow. It is particularly important when pale stools appear together with dark urine, jaundice, or itching.

Stool color can vary for other reasons, so one unusual bowel movement does not establish a diagnosis. Repeated pale stools, however, should be evaluated by a healthcare professional, especially when accompanied by other symptoms.

5. Persistent Itching Without an Obvious Rash

Some people with liver or bile duct disorders experience itching, sometimes across large areas of the body. This is known as pruritus and may be related to substances that accumulate or change in the body when bile flow is disrupted.

The itching may be more noticeable at night and may occur without an obvious rash. Scratching can eventually irritate the skin, making the discomfort worse.

Nevertheless, itching is common and has many other possible causes, including dry skin, allergies, medication reactions, and certain skin conditions.
