When should someone seek medical advice?
A new, unexplained, widespread, or persistent rash deserves medical assessment, particularly when it occurs alongside fever, unusual fatigue, swollen lymph nodes, genital sores, blisters, or a possible STI exposure.
Seek urgent care if the rash is rapidly worsening, involves extensive blistering or skin peeling, appears with difficulty breathing, or accompanies severe illness, confusion, a severe headache with neck stiffness, or significant eye symptoms. Purple spots that do not fade when pressed also warrant urgent evaluation, particularly when accompanied by fever or feeling very unwell.
Until the cause is understood, avoid scratching lesions, applying harsh chemicals, or taking leftover prescription medicines. If there is a possibility of an infectious condition, a clinician can advise whether close physical or sexual contact should be avoided temporarily.
The goal is not to assume the worst. It is to recognize that skin changes sometimes provide an important opportunity to identify a medical problem early.
A photograph can raise a question, but it cannot answer it conclusively. The combination of a medical history, physical examination, and appropriate testing is far more reliable than judging a disease from appearance alone.
