“Не домашнє, а …”: курсанти розповіли, як їх годують у прикордонній академії - vsim.ua

The military academy cafeteria was crowded during lunchtime.

Among hundreds of young cadets sat an older man quietly eating alone.

His name was Arthur Hayes, a 62-year-old retired military veteran.

He wore a simple, slightly faded military jacket and old black boots. His clothes looked nothing like the polished uniforms of the young cadets around him.

Arthur didn't care.

He simply wanted to finish his meal.

A group of young cadets noticed him.

One of them whispered:

CADET:
“Who is that old guy?”

Another laughed.

CADET:
“Maybe he wandered in from the street.”

The group laughed.

Arthur ignored them.

When Arthur stood up to get another meal, a young cadet deliberately stepped in front of him.

CADET:
“Excuse me, sir. This line is for academy personnel.”

Arthur calmly replied:

ARTHUR:
“I understand.”

The cadet looked at his faded jacket.

CADET:
“Then maybe you should eat somewhere else.”

Several cadets laughed.

Arthur simply stepped aside.

He didn't argue.

He didn't defend himself.

He just returned to his table.

A few minutes later, one of the cadets accidentally knocked Arthur's tray onto the floor.

Food spilled everywhere.

The cadet laughed nervously.

CADET:
“Oops. Sorry, old man.”

Arthur looked at him.

There was no anger in his eyes.

Only disappointment.

ARTHUR:
“Be careful with how you treat people.”

The cadet rolled his eyes.

CADET:
“Whatever.”

Suddenly, the cafeteria doors opened.

The entire room became silent.

The academy commander entered with several senior officers.

Everyone immediately stood.

The commander looked across the room.

Then he saw Arthur.

His expression changed instantly.

He walked directly toward him.

COMMANDER:
“General Hayes.”

Every cadet froze.

Arthur slowly stood.

The commander saluted him.

COMMANDER:
“It's an honor to have you back, sir.”

Silence.

The cadets stared at each other.

The young man who had mocked Arthur turned pale.

CADET:
“General…?”

The commander turned toward the cadets.

COMMANDER:
“You don't recognize him?”

Nobody answered.

The commander continued:

COMMANDER:
“General Arthur Hayes served this country for more than forty years.”

He looked at the young cadet.

COMMANDER:
“He trained generations of officers.”

The cafeteria became completely silent.

The cadet who had insulted Arthur lowered his head.

CADET:
“Sir… I didn't know.”

Arthur looked at him.

ARTHUR:
“That's exactly the problem.”

The cadet looked confused.

Arthur continued:

ARTHUR:
“You shouldn't need to know someone's rank before deciding to treat them with respect.”

The cadet lowered his head.

CADET:
“I'm sorry, sir.”

Arthur nodded.

ARTHUR:
“Learn from this.”

The commander invited Arthur to sit with the senior officers.

Before leaving, Arthur looked back at the young cadets.

RTS Planeta

ARTHUR:

“A uniform can tell you someone's position. It can never tell you someone's worth.”

The cadets remained silent.

The same man they had laughed at moments earlier was now being treated with respect by the highest-ranking officers in the academy.

And they finally understood:

Respect should never depend on appearance.
