Seek medical attention if constipation is accompanied by blood in the stool, unexplained weight loss, persistent or severe abdominal pain, vomiting, fever, significant abdominal swelling, or a major unexplained change in bowel habits.

These symptoms can have many possible causes, and they should not simply be blamed on “toxins.”

Severe constipation can occasionally result in fecal impaction, where a large mass of hard stool becomes difficult to pass.

This can require medical treatment.

Older adults, people with limited mobility, and people taking medications that slow intestinal movement may be particularly vulnerable.

Another warning sign is constipation that begins suddenly and persists, especially in someone who previously had regular bowel habits.

That change deserves attention.

The answer isn't necessarily a colon cleanse.

It may be something as straightforward as a medication side effect or dietary change, but a healthcare professional can determine what needs to be investigated.

It's also important to be skeptical of products promising dramatic detoxification.

Some herbal laxative products can cause significant diarrhea and dehydration.

Frequent or inappropriate laxative use can contribute to electrolyte disturbances.

Colon irrigation and enemas can also carry risks, particularly when performed unnecessarily or incorrectly.

The digestive system doesn't need to be completely empty to be healthy.

In fact, the gut contains a complex community of microorganisms that plays important roles in digestion and intestinal function.

The idea of “cleaning everything out” may sound appealing, but biology isn't the same as cleaning a pipe.

Your colon is a living organ.

It constantly absorbs, secretes, moves, and interacts with microorganisms and the rest of the digestive system.

So if you're dealing with constipation, focus on the fundamentals:

Eat enough fiber.

Drink an appropriate amount of fluid.

Stay physically active.

Respond to the urge to have a bowel movement.

Consider a footstool if a more squat-like position makes evacuation easier.

And if the problem persists, get medical advice.

The claim that you need to remove 13 kilograms of waste from your colon in the evening is not a reliable description of normal human digestion.

You don't need a dramatic detox ritual to have a healthy bowel.

What your digestive system usually needs is much more ordinary—and much more effective: adequate fiber, hydration, movement, regular habits, and appropriate medical care when something isn't right.
