A second-generation K-pop idol is known for her lazy dancing, and yet people aren’t mad.

In the K-pop industry, the ability to both sing and dance well has become an “unwritten rule” that idols are expected to follow. Idols who fall short in either area often face immense public backlash. For example, idols like BLACKPINK Jennie, IVE Jang Wonyoung, and (G)I-DLE Shuhua have had to work hard to overcome allegations of lazy dancing.

However, a notable exception exists in the form of T-ARA’s Soyeon, a second-generation K-pop idol who, despite often displaying a lack of enthusiasm in her dancing, has managed to avoid hate.

Recently, K-pop fans have been looking back at T-ARA’s career, with a particular focus on Soyeon, the group’s once-famous main vocalist. Netizens have been sharing old fancams of Soyeon, which show her performing choreography half-heartedly, not putting in much effort, or matching the group’s intensity. Some have humorously compared her dancing to simply working out. Surprisingly, there is a noticeable lack of negative comments about her dancing.

The second generation of K-pop is known for debuting legendary groups, with live singing skills, and exceptional dancing talent. However, T-ARA stood out among their colleagues, primarily due to its focus on ballads rather than intricate choreography-heavy songs.

Soyeon’s vocal skills were both sweet and technically impressive, often dominating T-ARA’s songs. Because of their vocal-heavy songs, the group didn’t focus on complex dance routines, allowing Soyeon to concentrate on her singing.

Following internal disputes and a subsequent boycott in Korea, the members of T-ARA expressed dissatisfaction with their management company, MBK Entertainment. Soyeon, in particular, occasionally showed her frustration on stage, which could explain her lack of enthusiasm in some performances. Fans, understanding the reason why, have generally been sympathetic, refraining from criticizing her.

Soyeon, born Park Soyeon in 1987, debuted with T-ARA in 2009. During their peak, T-ARA and Soyeon enjoyed immense popularity across Asia. However, the group faced a major setback in 2013 when they were falsely accused of a bullying scandal. After her contract with MBK Entertainment ended in 2017, Soyeon and fellow member Boram left the group.
