Three times you should avoid washing your hair, experts warn

Think Before You Wash: 3 Times Experts Say You Should Avoid It
Experts warn that washing your hair right after waking up or on an empty or full stomach can cause dizziness and low blood pressure.

Many people shower in the morning to stay awake or in the evening to relax. But not all times are ideal for washing hair, Life Times magazine said.

Experts say the following are the best times to avoid washing your hair.

Early morning, just after waking up

Wu Xinyan, deputy head of the Department of Traditional Medicine at the Civil Aviation General Hospital in China, said the traditional advice of avoiding morning showers has a scientific basis.

After waking, blood circulation is slow, and the body’s organs need time to recover. Washing hair at this time stimulates blood vessels in the brain, which can raise blood pressure and increase the risk of dizziness and discomfort. Older adults and people with high blood pressure, heart disease, or weak health should avoid this habit.

In traditional medicine, the head gathers yang energy. Morning is when yang energy is formed, while water is yin. Showering too early can disrupt this energy flow and affect health.

On a full or empty stomach

After a large meal, blood concentrates in the digestive system. Washing hair at this time can redirect blood to the head, causing bloating and indigestion.

When the stomach is empty, blood sugar is low. Showering can deplete energy and trigger hypoglycemia, with symptoms such as dizziness, palpitations, and nausea. People with diabetes, high blood pressure, or heart conditions should not wash hair on an empty stomach.

When the body is exhausted

After physical or mental labor, the body needs rest before showering. Washing hair when extremely tired can reduce blood flow to the heart and brain and may cause fainting.

Wang Jingqing, head of the Neurology Department at the Nanjing Traditional Medicine Hospital in China, recommends washing hair during the day when temperatures are stable or in the evening after meals, but not right before sleep.

Three common hair care mistakes

Experts say improper hair washing can also harm hair and scalp health.

Showering infrequently to reduce oil: Lu Yuangang, head of Plastic Surgery at the Army Medical University in China, said washing less does not reduce oil production, as washing only cleans surface oil and does not increase sebum production. People with oily scalps should wash daily or every other day to prevent clogged follicles that cause acne or hair loss. People with dry hair can wash every 2–3 days.

Scratching the scalp with nails: Fingernails carry bacteria, and scratching can injure the scalp and cause follicle inflammation. Instead, gently massage the scalp with fingertips in circular motions. The ideal water temperature is around 40 degrees Celsius.

Sleeping with wet hair: A moist scalp lowers temperature and allows bacteria and fungus to grow, increasing the risk of headaches. Wet hair also breaks more easily from friction with the pillow. Hair should be dried before sleep, with the hair dryer 10–15 cm away from the scalp.
