Have you ever noticed tiny, fuzzy insects resting on your bathroom walls or hovering around the sink or shower? Many people mistake them for fruit flies or small moths, but they are actually drain flies, also known as moth flies.

Although these insects do not bite or spread disease in the same way as mosquitoes, their presence usually indicates that organic matter has built up inside your drains. Ignoring them can allow the infestation to grow quickly.

What Are Drain Flies?

Drain flies belong to the Psychodidae family. They are small, gray or brown insects with fuzzy wings that give them a moth-like appearance. They are weak fliers and are usually found resting on walls near sinks, showers, bathtubs, or floor drains.

Because they reproduce rapidly, even a few flies can become dozens within a short period if the breeding source is left untreated.

Why Are They in Your Bathroom?

Bathrooms provide the perfect environment for drain flies because they offer everything these insects need:

• High humidity
• Standing or slow-moving water
• Organic material inside drains
• Warm temperatures
• Minimal disturbance

Rather than living in the open, drain flies lay their eggs inside the slimy biofilm that forms on the inside of drainpipes. The larvae feed on bacteria, soap residue, hair, and decaying organic matter until they mature into adults.
