Tips to clean bathroom tile grout without using chemicals

The grout lines in the bathroom or kitchen can turn black due to the accumulation of dirt and mold over time. To clean them, you can apply the following simple tips.

Tile surfaces usually maintain their shine for a long time, but the grout lines (the spaces between tiles, typically filled with cement or sealing compounds) can discolor quickly. Grout can yellow and even turn black due to dirt buildup and mold growth.

To restore the grout to its original whiteness, you can use the following method.

  • Using baking soda and hydrogen peroxide

Baking soda is commonly used in daily life. It can be used for cooking as well as cleaning household items. Baking soda is excellent for whitening and deodorizing. Meanwhile, hydrogen peroxide is very effective in removing dirt and whitening. It also helps kill mold spores more effectively and safely compared to chemical bleach.

To clean the grout, mix baking soda with hydrogen peroxide to create a thick paste. Use a brush to apply this mixture to the grout lines and leave it for at least 5 minutes.

Next, use a stiff-bristled brush to scrub the grout thoroughly. If the stains persist, you can add more of the mixture and leave it for a few minutes before scrubbing again. Once cleaned, rinse with water to remove any residue.

  • Using vinegar

Another substance that can help you clean tile grout is vinegar. Mix equal parts vinegar and water. If you don't have vinegar, you can use vodka as a substitute. Put the solution in a spray bottle and spray directly onto the dirty grout. Leave it for about 15 minutes. After that, use a stiff brush to scrub the grout, removing dirt and mold.

Vinegar kills mold and prevents it from reappearing. This method is effective and cost-efficient. You can also replace vinegar or vodka with rice wine.

To prevent grout from discoloring and getting moldy quickly, you should clean it regularly. After using a squeegee, mop, or towel to wipe the floor, make sure to dry the tiles to limit water accumulation that causes grout to mold faster.
