Toilet flushing weak and no suction? Here's a tip to help you avoid expensive calls to a plumber

How to Fix a Weak Toilet Flush Without Calling a Technician
If your toilet flush is weak, don’t rush to call a technician just yet. Try these quick tips, which can improve the flush by up to 10 times immediately.
1. Check the Flush Valve Impulse
-
Locate the flush valve, which is fully open on one side and partially open on the other. Quickly press one of them (until it's completely opened), and observe the flush power. Check where the water level in the tank drops to (it should be about 3 cm from the bottom when fully flushed, and about half of that when the valve is partially open).
-
Once the tank fills with water, press the other valve (until it's completely opened) and observe the flush power again. Check whether the tank empties completely or partially.
-
Repeat the process a few times to see if there’s any significant difference between the flush impulse and the button press on the lid. If no difference is noted, the issue might be with the flush valve, which may need to be replaced.
-
If you notice a difference, the flush button is the issue. Adjust the two screws of the flush button by rotating them a few times. Then, place the lid back on and feel for any gaps, adjusting the gaps to no more than 2-3 mm.
2. Check the Size of the Flush Rod
If the flush rod is too short, it won’t fully open the flush valve when pressed, leading to a weak flush. To fix this, carefully measure the flush rod before cutting it.
3. Inspect the Flush Lever or Button
If the nut securing the flush lever is loose, or if the flush button is broken, the toilet won’t flush properly. To ensure the water flows properly, tighten the nut or replace the flush lever or button if necessary.
4. Check the Toilet Ventilation System
Ensure that the toilet ventilation pipe isn’t clogged or incorrectly installed. If you're unsure how to check this, contact a qualified plumber for assistance.
5. Check for Blockages in the Water Supply or Siphon
Make sure the water supply line to the toilet or the siphon isn’t blocked by any obstructions. If you find something blocking it, remove the obstruction to ensure proper flushing.
How to Prevent Weak Flushing and Slow Draining
It’s important to understand that a toilet that flushes weakly or drains slowly doesn’t happen without a cause. Here are a few tips to avoid this issue in the future:
- Don’t flush trash like cigarette butts, soap packaging, etc., down the toilet.
- Avoid flushing large amounts of toilet paper at once.
- Always close the toilet lid after each use.
- Regularly perform a monthly maintenance check to prevent blockages.
- Place a small trash bin in the bathroom to dispose of non-toilet items.
- Avoid pouring laundry detergent water into the toilet.
By following these tips, you can maintain your toilet and avoid common issues like weak flushing or slow drainage. Hope this advice helps you and your family!
