1. Berries
Strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, and blackberries are among the most nutrient-dense fruits you can add to a balanced diet.
They contain fiber and a variety of polyphenols, including anthocyanins in many dark-colored berries. These plant compounds are being studied for their relationships with inflammation, oxidative stress, and cardiovascular health.
That does not mean berries dissolve an existing clot.
Their potential value is much broader: regularly consuming a variety of fruits and vegetables is associated with healthier dietary patterns, and berries can contribute important nutrients while adding relatively little sodium.
Fresh or frozen berries without added sugar are generally easy options.
2. Oranges
Oranges provide vitamin C, folate, potassium, and fiber when eaten as whole fruit.
Vitamin C contributes to normal collagen formation and supports several physiological functions, while potassium plays an important role in normal muscle and nerve function and helps regulate fluid balance.
Whole oranges also contain fiber that is largely lost when the fruit is turned into juice.
For cardiovascular nutrition, that distinction matters.
A glass of fruit juice can contain substantial amounts of naturally occurring sugar while providing less fiber than the whole fruit. Eating the orange itself tends to be more filling and preserves the fruit's fiber.
3. Grapefruit
Grapefruit is another citrus fruit containing vitamin C and various plant compounds.
However, grapefruit deserves a special warning.
It can interact with several medications by affecting enzymes and transport proteins involved in drug metabolism. Some cholesterol-lowering drugs, blood-pressure medicines, and other medications can be affected.
Therefore, people taking prescription medication should check with a pharmacist or doctor before regularly consuming grapefruit if they are unsure whether an interaction exists.
This is especially important for anyone taking medication related to cardiovascular disease.
The lesson is simple: a food can be nutritious and still interact with medication.
