Doctors Warn: Two Popular Bedtime Drinks May Disrupt Your Health More Than You Think
Two bedtime drinks may quietly affect sleep, blood sugar, and heart health.
Many people wake up in the middle of the night or early in the morning with an uncomfortable dry mouth. While occasional dryness may simply result from dehydration or sleeping with your mouth open, persistent symptoms should not be ignored. Saliva plays an essential role in protecting the teeth, gums, and oral tissues while helping with digestion and controlling harmful bacteria. When saliva production decreases, discomfort, bad breath, and even dental problems can develop over time. Understanding the possible causes of nighttime dry mouth is the first step toward finding an effective solution.
One of the most common reasons for waking up with a dry mouth is mouth breathing. People who have nasal congestion due to allergies, colds, or a deviated nasal septum may breathe through their mouths while sleeping. This constant airflow quickly dries the oral tissues and leaves the mouth feeling sticky by morning. If you frequently snore or wake with a sore throat as well, mouth breathing could be the culprit.
A second common cause is dehydration. Not drinking enough fluids during the day, exercising intensely without replacing lost fluids, consuming alcohol in the evening, or drinking excessive caffeine may all contribute to dehydration. Since saliva is primarily composed of water, even mild dehydration can reduce saliva production overnight.
Third, certain medications are among the leading causes of chronic dry mouth. Hundreds of prescription and over-the-counter medicines—including antihistamines, antidepressants, blood pressure medications, muscle relaxants, and some pain relievers—list dry mouth as a possible side effect. If symptoms began after starting a new medication, speak with your healthcare provider before making any changes.
Another possible reason is sleep apnea, a condition in which breathing repeatedly stops and starts during sleep. People with sleep apnea often snore loudly, gasp for air, wake feeling tired, and experience dry mouth because of frequent mouth breathing. Since untreated sleep apnea increases the risk of heart disease and other health problems, persistent symptoms deserve medical evaluation.
The fifth cause involves medical conditions that affect saliva production. Diabetes, Sjögren's syndrome, Parkinson's disease, and certain autoimmune disorders can all contribute to chronic dry mouth. Poorly controlled blood sugar may increase urination and dehydration, further worsening symptoms.
Sixth, smoking or vaping can irritate the mouth and reduce saliva flow. Tobacco products also increase the risk of gum disease, tooth decay, and oral infections, making dry mouth even more problematic over time.
The seventh factor is dry indoor air, particularly during winter when heating systems reduce humidity levels. Sleeping in a very dry room can cause the mouth and throat to become uncomfortable by morning. Using a humidifier may help some people reduce these symptoms.
Finally, aging itself does not directly cause dry mouth, but older adults are more likely to take medications or have chronic health conditions that affect saliva production. As a result, dry mouth becomes more common with age.
Fortunately, there are several practical ways to relieve nighttime dry mouth. Staying well hydrated throughout the day, limiting alcohol before bedtime, reducing caffeine intake late in the afternoon, and treating nasal congestion may all improve symptoms. Sleeping on your side instead of your back may reduce snoring and mouth breathing for some people. Sugar-free chewing gum or lozenges during the day can stimulate saliva production, while alcohol-free mouth rinses designed for dry mouth may provide additional comfort.
If dry mouth persists for several weeks, is accompanied by difficulty swallowing, frequent cavities, mouth sores, or excessive thirst, it is important to consult a healthcare professional or dentist. Identifying the underlying cause can prevent complications and improve both oral and overall health.
