Overgrown plants touching the house, piles of leaves, damp mulch, firewood, and cracks near the foundation can provide excellent hiding places for colonies.

You should also consider recent weather.

If there has been heavy rain, ants may be leaving flooded nests.

If the weather has been unusually hot or dry, they may be searching for water.

One of the simplest ways to discourage ants is to remove the resources attracting them.

Keep food sealed.

Clean spills promptly.

Empty garbage regularly.

Fix leaks.

Keep counters and floors clean.

Seal obvious cracks and gaps where appropriate.

However, if you notice large numbers of ants repeatedly appearing, especially winged ants, carpenter ants, or ants emerging from walls or wooden structures, the situation deserves more attention.

Certain species can indicate moisture problems or structural concerns.

And if you cannot determine where they are coming from, professional pest control may be appropriate.

The important point is this:

Don't just kill the ants you can see.

Find out why they are there.

Otherwise, you may remove hundreds of ants today only to discover another trail tomorrow.

CHAPTER 5 — The Real Message May Be Simpler Than You Think

There is something almost unsettling about discovering hundreds of ants inside your home.

They move together.

They follow invisible trails.

They appear from tiny cracks.

And sometimes, they seem to arrive overnight.

That can make the experience feel mysterious.

But nature is often mysterious simply because we cannot see all the information animals are responding to.
