At Fort Raven Military Academy, everyone knew one thing:

Ethan Walker and Ryan Carter hated each other.

From the first day of training, they competed in everything.

Shooting scores.

Obstacle courses.

Endurance runs.

Tactical exams.

Whenever Ethan finished first, Ryan finished second.

Whenever Ryan won, Ethan was right behind him.

Their rivalry became legendary across the academy.

During one obstacle race, Ryan smirked after beating Ethan by a single second.

“Try harder next time.”

Ethan wiped the mud from his face.

“Enjoy it while it lasts.”

The instructors often had to separate them during training.

Neither would admit it, but they pushed each other harder than anyone else.

When graduation came, they tied for the highest overall score.

The commander looked at both men and said,

“You two would either become the strongest team… or destroy each other.”

They chose different squads and barely spoke again.

Two years later, fate put them back together.

A rescue mission in the northern mountains.

A civilian convoy had been trapped after a series of explosions triggered landslides.

Ethan and Ryan were assigned to the same extraction unit.

The tension was immediate.

Inside the transport helicopter, Ryan muttered,

“Don’t slow the team down.”

Ethan answered without looking at him.

“Worry about yourself.”

The mission quickly turned into chaos.

Smoke covered the valley.

Rocks continued falling from the cliffs.

The squad managed to rescue several civilians and began retreating toward the extraction point.

Then another explosion ripped through the mountain.

The ground collapsed beneath Ryan.

He fell onto a lower ledge and slammed into the rocks.

His radio went dead.

Ethan reached the ridge and looked down.

Ryan was unconscious.

Below him, a fuel truck was burning.

The flames were moving toward the remaining ammunition crates.

If they exploded, the entire ledge would be destroyed.

The commander shouted,

“Ethan, leave him! We’re out of time!”

Ethan froze.

For years he had wanted to beat Ryan.

Outrun him.

Outscore him.

Prove he was better.

Now the mountain was offering him a terrible opportunity.

He could leave.

And no one would blame him.

Ethan closed his eyes for one second.

Then he turned and ran back.

He slid down the rocks and reached Ryan.

The rival who had mocked him, challenged him, and stood in his way for years lay motionless in the dust.

Ethan grabbed his vest.

“Ryan! Wake up!”

No response.

The fire roared closer.

Ethan lifted him onto his shoulders.

The climb back up was brutal.

Rocks kept falling around them.

Twice Ethan slipped.

Twice he refused to let go.

Halfway up, Ryan regained consciousness.

His voice was weak.

“Why are you doing this?”

Ethan kept climbing.

“Because you’re not dying here.”

Ryan stared at him in shock.

They reached the ridge just as the first ammunition crates began exploding behind them.

The rescue helicopter lowered a rope.

But the pilot shouted over the radio:

“The aircraft is overloaded. Only one more person can be lifted at a time!”

The rope swung between them.

Ethan grabbed it.

Ryan looked at him.

For a brief moment, both men understood the same thing.

There might not be time for a second lift.

Ethan pushed the rope toward Ryan.

“You go first.”

Ryan’s eyes widened.

“No. You carried me up here.”

Ethan almost laughed despite the danger.

“For once, stop arguing.”

Ryan shoved the rope back.

“For once, I’m not trying to beat you.”

Another explosion shook the ridge.

The rope swung wildly.

Both men looked at each other.

Then, at the exact same moment, they tried to force the other toward it.

The crew chief shouted,

“Move now!”

Ryan finally grabbed Ethan’s arm.

“If we both stay, we both die.”

Ethan clenched his jaw.

Ryan clipped the rope to Ethan’s harness.

“You saved me. That means you get to live.”

Before Ethan could protest, Ryan pushed him toward the edge.

The helicopter began lifting Ethan.

He looked down in horror.

“Ryan!”

Ryan gave a tired smile.

“Looks like I finally beat you at something.”

Then a second rescue rope dropped beside him.

The crew had made room.

Ryan grabbed it and was pulled up just as the ridge exploded beneath them.

Inside the helicopter, both men collapsed on the floor, covered in dust and blood.

For a long moment, neither spoke.

Then Ryan looked at Ethan.

“You know what I realized down there?”

Ethan breathed heavily.

“What?”

Ryan smiled weakly.

“I never hated you.”

Ethan stared at him.

Ryan continued,

“I was afraid that if I stopped competing with you, I’d stop becoming better.”

Ethan shook his head and laughed for the first time in years.

“You’re still annoying.”

Ryan grinned.

“And you’re still too stubborn to die.”

The entire helicopter burst into relieved laughter.

Months later, during the unit ceremony, the commander pinned medals on both men.

Then he said,

“Rivals compete for victory. Brothers compete to make each other stronger.”

Ethan and Ryan looked at each other.

Neither saluted first.

Instead, they shook hands.

Not as enemies.

Not as rivals.

But as the two soldiers who had each tried to give the other a chance to live.
