Surprisingly, liver problems can also cause pain in the right shoulder or upper back. This is known as “referred pain,” which happens when irritation in the liver affects nearby nerves that connect to other parts of the body. The discomfort may feel like a deep, persistent ache.
Liver disease can lead to fluid buildup in the abdomen, a condition called ascites. This may cause bloating, tightness, and general discomfort. While not always painful at first, it can become increasingly uncomfortable as fluid accumulates.
In some cases, liver dysfunction can cause widespread abdominal discomfort rather than pain in a single spot. This is often associated with digestive disturbances, including nausea, loss of appetite, or indigestion.

Chronic liver conditions, particularly autoimmune liver diseases, can sometimes lead to muscle aches and joint pain. This type of discomfort may feel similar to fatigue-related soreness or mild inflammation.
Although not always described as “pain,” severe itching (pruritus) is a common symptom of liver disease. It occurs when bile salts build up under the skin due to impaired liver function. The itching can be intense and persistent, especially at night.
When the liver is not effectively removing toxins from the body, these substances can accumulate in the bloodstream. This may contribute to headaches, fatigue, and a general sense of discomfort or malaise.

Occasional discomfort does not necessarily mean you have liver disease. However, you should seek medical attention if you experience:
