Why Do Drivers Need Potatoes?

Potatoes turn out to be surprisingly useful for drivers

Experts reveal that rubbing a potato on your windshield can help prevent it from fogging up.

Specialists from the famous Scottish automotive company John Clark Motor Group shared this unexpected tip. They recommend rubbing a cut potato over the windshield because it can help stop frost from building up and clouding the glass — a common problem during winter.

Not only that, but rubbing potato on the windshield can also be helpful when driving in rainy weather. According to experts at John Clark Motor Group, “the starch in potatoes acts as a barrier between the glass and the air, reducing fog buildup.”

The American channel The Weather Network also explained that potatoes can help prevent ice from forming on windshields. If you rub a potato on the glass the night before, you may only need to turn on the windshield wipers the next morning to clear away snow that collected overnight.

The well-known automotive website AutoBlog once featured this potato trick in a video showing that the windshield did not fog up even when exposed to steam from a cup of hot water placed underneath it.

Meanwhile, the Facebook page Bezerra Good Tips demonstrated the difference between glass surfaces treated with potato and untreated ones by pouring water over them.

“Now I’m going to pour water on the part of the glass rubbed with potato. The water slides right off instead of sticking and leaving marks like on the other side. Nothing remains — all the water runs away without a single drop left,” Bezerra Good Tips said in the video.
