Waking up in the middle of the night unable to move can be one of the most frightening experiences a person ever faces. Your eyes may be open, your mind completely awake, yet your body refuses to respond. Some people even report sensing a dark figure nearby, hearing strange sounds, or feeling pressure on their chest. This phenomenon is known as sleep paralysis, and although it can be terrifying, it is generally harmless.

Sleep paralysis most commonly occurs during the transition between sleeping and waking. Normally, the body temporarily relaxes and prevents movement during the REM (rapid eye movement) stage of sleep to stop people from physically acting out their dreams. Occasionally, the brain wakes before this temporary muscle paralysis has completely disappeared. As a result, a person becomes conscious while remaining unable to move or speak for a few seconds—or, in some cases, a few minutes.

Many people who experience sleep paralysis also report vivid hallucinations. These can include seeing shadowy figures standing beside the bed, hearing whispers, footsteps, or buzzing sounds, and even feeling as though someone is sitting on their chest. Although these experiences feel incredibly real, researchers believe they are the result of dreaming elements continuing briefly after consciousness returns.
