A simple habit could shorten your water's safety and even damage your car.
Many drivers have done it without giving it a second thought—leaving a plastic water bottle in the car while running errands, heading to work, or parking under the sun. It seems harmless, but experts say this everyday habit can create several unexpected problems. From heat-related chemical changes to fire hazards and bacterial growth, a forgotten bottle of water may not be as innocent as it appears.
One of the biggest concerns is extreme heat. On sunny days, the temperature inside a parked vehicle can rise dramatically within minutes. Plastic bottles exposed to prolonged heat may gradually degrade, especially if they are designed for single use. While occasional exposure is unlikely to cause immediate harm, repeatedly drinking water stored in hot plastic bottles is generally discouraged because heat can alter the bottle's material over time.
Another issue is bacterial contamination. Once a bottle has been opened, bacteria from the mouth can enter the remaining water. If the bottle is then left inside a warm vehicle for several hours, the warm environment may encourage bacterial growth. Reusing the same bottle for several days without washing it increases this risk even further.
Many people are surprised to learn that a clear plastic bottle filled with water can also act like a magnifying lens. Under very specific conditions, sunlight passing through the curved bottle may focus onto a surface inside the vehicle. Although such incidents are uncommon, firefighters have documented isolated cases where concentrated sunlight contributed to scorching upholstery or other interior materials.
Besides health and safety concerns, leaving bottles in a hot vehicle can simply ruin the taste and quality of the water. Warm water is less refreshing, and repeated heating and cooling cycles may affect its flavor.
A safer option is to carry a reusable insulated stainless-steel bottle when traveling. It keeps water cooler for longer, is designed for repeated use, and is generally more durable than disposable plastic bottles. If you must use a disposable bottle, avoid leaving it inside a hot vehicle for extended periods and replace it regularly rather than refilling it indefinitely.
Experts also recommend taking all beverages with you whenever possible, especially during hot weather. If you notice that a plastic bottle has become warped, cracked, or has been exposed to intense heat for many hours, it is best to replace it.
A small habit change—simply taking your water bottle with you when leaving the car—can help improve hygiene, preserve water quality, and reduce unnecessary risks for both your health and your vehicle.
