Can Raw Ginger Carry Parasites? What You Should Really Know Before Eating It
Raw ginger is healthy, but poor hygiene may increase contamination risks.
Healthy nails are more than a cosmetic feature—they can provide valuable clues about your overall well-being. While occasional nail splitting or breakage is common, especially after repeated exposure to water or harsh chemicals, nails that constantly crack, peel, or become unusually fragile may deserve closer attention. In many cases, brittle nails are harmless and related to everyday habits, but they can sometimes point to nutritional deficiencies, medical conditions, or environmental factors that should not be overlooked.
The medical term for brittle nails is onychoschizia, which describes nails that split into thin layers or break easily at the tips. This condition becomes more common with age because nails naturally lose moisture over time. However, age is only one possible explanation.
Frequent contact with water is among the leading causes of brittle nails. Repeated cycles of soaking and drying can weaken the nail plate, causing it to peel or crack. People who wash dishes frequently, clean without gloves, or work in occupations that require constant handwashing often experience this problem. Exposure to harsh detergents, solvents, nail polish removers containing acetone, or frequent use of gel manicures may also contribute to nail damage.
Nutrition also plays an important role in nail health. Nails are primarily composed of keratin, a structural protein that depends on adequate nutrition for healthy growth. Insufficient intake of protein, iron, zinc, biotin, or certain vitamins may contribute to weak or slow-growing nails. Although biotin supplements are commonly promoted for stronger nails, scientific evidence suggests they are most beneficial for individuals with a true deficiency rather than everyone.
Certain medical conditions may also affect nail strength. Iron-deficiency anemia, thyroid disorders, psoriasis, eczema, fungal nail infections, and some circulation disorders can all cause changes in nail appearance. In these cases, brittle nails are usually accompanied by additional symptoms such as fatigue, dry skin, hair loss, skin rashes, or changes in nail color and thickness.
Fortunately, many cases of brittle nails improve with simple lifestyle changes. Keeping nails trimmed reduces the risk of catching and tearing them. Applying moisturizing cream or cuticle oil after washing your hands helps restore moisture to both the nails and surrounding skin. Wearing protective gloves while cleaning or washing dishes limits exposure to water and chemicals that weaken the nail structure.
A balanced diet remains one of the best ways to support healthy nail growth. Lean proteins, fish, eggs, beans, leafy green vegetables, nuts, seeds, dairy products, and whole grains provide essential nutrients that contribute to strong nails. Staying well hydrated also helps maintain healthy skin and nails, although hydration alone does not cure brittle nails.
It is equally important to avoid habits that damage nails. Biting your nails, picking at cuticles, aggressively filing the nail surface, or repeatedly removing gel polish without proper care can all increase the likelihood of splitting and breakage. Choosing gentle nail care products and allowing nails occasional breaks from cosmetic treatments may help improve their condition over time.
Although brittle nails are usually not a sign of serious illness, certain changes should prompt medical evaluation. Nails that suddenly become severely brittle, develop deep grooves, separate from the nail bed, become significantly discolored, or are accompanied by pain, swelling, or infection should be examined by a healthcare professional. Persistent nail changes together with unexplained fatigue, weight changes, cold intolerance, or other symptoms may indicate an underlying condition requiring treatment.
Healthy nails usually grow slowly, with fingernails requiring about six months to completely replace themselves. As a result, improvements may take time even after correcting the underlying cause. Consistent nail care, proper nutrition, and protection from repeated damage are often the most effective long-term strategies.
Your nails may not reveal every aspect of your health, but they can serve as useful indicators of your body's overall condition. Paying attention to persistent changes and seeking medical advice when necessary can help identify problems early while keeping your nails healthy and strong.
