Security camera captured a woman leaving a Shell gas station at dawn on April 2, 2023. Just a few minutes later, a horrifying mystery was discovered in the restroom.
Leaving the body of a newborn baby after giving birth
On December 17, Diana Guadalupe Zavala Lopez, 27 years old, was sentenced to 4 years in prison for concealing evidence when leaving the body of her newborn baby in a gas station restroom after giving birth. She is a Mexican citizen who overstayed her visa to the United States.
Surveillance footage shows Zavala Lopez entering the restroom in the early hours of the morning, wearing a T-shirt and shorts, then leaving 15 minutes later and driving away from the scene in a white Cadillac.
Customer Shocked to Find Body in Toilet
Around 4:25 a.m., another customer entered the restroom and was shocked to discover the body of a newborn baby in the toilet.
A belated confession
Zavala Lopez was arrested in August 2023 at a bus station in Texas and pleaded guilty to concealing a body to obstruct the investigation. Police had previously released a video of the search for a “suspicious person” to solve the case.
Judge Kristin M. Guiney sentenced her to four years in prison, including 489 days of pretrial detention. The tragedy shocked the public and raised many heartbreaking questions about the mother’s responsibility.
Before that, Tuoi Tre newspaper also published an article with the title: "18-year-old mother gives birth in the toilet, puts baby in hospital trash". The specific content is as follows:
On December 21, Dr. Nguyen Minh Quan - Director of Thu Duc District Hospital - said that he had just sent a quick report to the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health about the case of a woman giving birth in the hospital toilet, then throwing the baby in the trash.
According to Dr. Kim Phuc Thanh - Head of the hospital's general planning department, at about 7:20 a.m. on December 20, the hospital's obstetrics department received a baby boy weighing about 3kg from hospital staff after the woman gave birth in the hospital toilet.
At this time, the baby boy's umbilical cord was partially broken, there was no bleeding, he cried loudly, and the baby was pink. The baby boy was identified as the child of the mother N.T.L.A. (18 years old, residing in Tanh Linh district, Binh Thuan province).
Dr. Thanh said that Ms. A. had previously come to the hospital for a check-up. According to this woman, at that time, because she needed to go to the toilet, she went into the toilet and suddenly gave birth to the baby and threw it in the trash.
After that, she went outside to sit in the emergency area of the hospital.
A few minutes later, hospital staff heard the baby crying in the toilet, went in to check and discovered the baby in the trash. Immediately, the doctors clamped, cut the umbilical cord, dried, warmed the baby, and transferred the baby to the pediatric intensive care unit for treatment.
"At first, the mother did not admit that the baby was hers. However, when the hospital said they would report it to the police, the mother admitted it. Until now, the mother has not explained why she put the baby in the trash can," said Dr. Thanh.
As of the morning of December 21, the health of both mother and baby is stable. The mother is being monitored postpartum because during birth, her perineum was torn and had to be stitched and stopped bleeding, and the baby needs to be monitored for infection because it was thrown in the trash can.
"Currently, an aunt is taking care of the baby. As for the family situation, the husband of the mother has not yet verified the details. We are examining and re-evaluating the mother's psychology," added Dr. Thanh.
Previously, social media posted a video of some women discovering a naked newborn baby, crying loudly, lying in a trash can covered with white trash. The outside of the trash can was marked with the words "infectious waste".
These women quickly took out the trash and picked up the baby, saying as they ran: "Oh my god, how pitiful, how strange. Quickly, quickly take the baby to the maternity ward."
