This article explores the stories of nine beloved celebrity couples in Philippine showbiz who found love on and off the set, but eventually parted ways—leaving their multitude of fans heartbroken.
Note that this include relationships that lasted for at least four years, and couples that openly admitted their breakup.
KATHRYN BERNARDO AND DANIEL PADILLA (2011-2023)
Kathryn Bernardo and Daniel Padilla, popularly known as KathNiel, began as a love team with proven chemistry that quickly catapulted them as one of the country’s most phenomenal on-screen pairs.
Not surprisingly, their real love story turned out to be a bigger blockbuster that captured the nation’s heart.
Together, they top-billed six series, five blockbuster movies, and numerous commercials.
After 11 years as an item, on November 30, 2023, they officially announced their break-up through separate posts in their Instagram accounts.
NADINE LUSTRE AND JAMES REID (2016-2020)
Nadine Lustre and James Reid became a phenomenon as JaDine in the movie Diary ng Panget (2014) and in the series On the Wings of Love (2015).
After a highly publicized relationship, they announced their amicable breakup in January 2020.
They have since pursued individual projects. Nadine is in a relationship with Christophe Bariou and James is now with Issa Pressman.
KIM CHIU AND GERALD ANDERSON (2006-2010)
Kim Chiu and Gerald Anderson, or Kimerald, started their journey in the first edition of the reality show Pinoy Big Brother (2006), and went on to headline TV dramas, such as Sana Maulit Muli (2007), Tayong Dalawa (2009) as well as the movies I’ve Fallen For You (2007), Paano na Kaya (2010, Till My Heartaches End (2010), to name a few.
Their breakup in 2010 was a sad moment for the Kimerald fans, but both have since moved forward.
Kim has found success as a Kapamilya leading lady, and became the other half of KimXi, her love team with Xian Lim. The two were paired in 2011, and eventually became a couple.
Gerald, for his part, became a Kapamilya leading man who was paired with Yam Concepcion, Ivana Alawi, Pia Wurtzbach, Bea Alonzo, and his current girlfriend Julia Barretto.
ANNE CURTIS AND SAM MILBY (2007-2011)
Anne Curtis and Sam Milby, once a beloved couple on and off the screen, shared their romance through projects such as Maging Sino Ka Man (2006).
Their breakup in 2011 was a significant moment in Philippine showbiz, but they have since maintained a professional relationship. They worked on projects, such as The Mall, The Merrier (2019).
Anne is married to Erwan Heusaff while Sam is engaged to Catriona Gray and is bound to marry her sometime in 2024.
KRISTINE HERMOSA AND JERICHO ROSALES (1999-2002)
Echoand Tin’s first pair-up was in 1999 via the series Ang Munting Paraiso.
At some point, Kristine’s character had to leave the show. On the other hand, Jericho Rosales stayed until the farewell episode in 2002.
The time Kristine left, she and Echo were already taping for their next project, which is Pangako Sa ‘Yo. It was around this time when they fell in love for real.
Their romance ended in 2002, but they continued working together in projects like, Ngayong Nandito Ka and Sana’y Wala Nang Wakas, which both aired in 2003.
CLAUDINE BARRETTO AND RICO YAN (1998-2002)
Claudine and Rico were first paired in the 1996 movie, Radio Romance, then bacame the main cast of the hit 1997 TV drama series, Mula Sa Puso, with Diether Ocampo.
Fans and viewers saw more of the Claudine-Rico love team in Madrasta, Flames, Saan Ka Man Naroroon, Dahil Mahal Na Mahal Kita, and the romantic-comedy film, Got 2 Believe, considered by critics as among the best Filipino romantic movies made.
They officially became a couple on March 4, 1998, and broke up in March 2002, the same month Rico died.
Their breakup is perhaps one of the most (if the the most) publicized and most controversial in showbiz history.
SHARON CUNETA AND GABBY CONCEPCION (1981-1993)
The partnership of Sharon Cuneta and Gabby Concepcion both on-screen and in real life was the talk of the town, with the film Dear Heart (1964) marking their hugely successful collaboration.
After their split in 1987, they went on to lead successful careers independently, and occasionally reunited for projects.
Their fans had hoped that they would reconcile, but after Gabby married Jenny Syquia in June 1993, they knew then the Sha-Gab love team was truly over.
Their next reunion would happen after 30 years through the successful Dear Heart: The Concert (2023).
NORA AUNOR AND TIRSO CRUZ III (1970)
Nora Aunor and Tirso Cruz III, or Guy and Pip, were one of the earlier iconic love teams.
Their pairing was phenomenal that even the doll given by Pip to Guy—she was named Maria Leonora Theresa—had its own contract for TV and movie appearance, and even had her own launching movie.
The three-foot ceramic doll was considered by the fans as the “daughter” of Guy and Pip, and her mood would indicate the couple’s relationship status: If she’s sad, this meabs her parents are fighting.
The two did not end up together.
Nora tied the knot with Christiopher de Leon in 1975, and Tirso got married to Lyn Ynchausti in 1981.
