Enormous Saltwater Crocodile Races Boat In Far North Queensland

Tropical North Queensland can certainly boast that it is home to its fair share of huge wildlife, and saltwater crocodiles are up there on the scale of massive beasts.

The gigantic creatures – they can grow up to 7m in length, with formidable jaws and armour-like hides – are one of the world’s most enduring species, having outlasted dinosaurs by some 65 million years.

So when fisherman Robert Dunn found himself in a race with one of the enormous reptile he’d have been forgiven if he went into a state of absolute panic.

However, when Dunn saw the croc speeding alongside his tinny he held his nerve, and even managed to film footage of the encounter as the saltie raced him while he was heading out to check his crab pots.

“He was gaffing it for that deep water,” Dunn told the Cairns Post of the crocodile, which he filmed leaping out of the water like a dolphin on the Bloomfield River, about 35km north of Cape Tribulation.

“He was sizing me up and I thought he was going to go for the tinny, but lucky he didn’t.”

“I saw it in the shallows and was underneath the tinny for a while,” he said.

“He came up with this growl and locked eyes with me. I was only in a 3.5 tinny and he cruised right next to me. It was interesting.

“It went down then came up again and I got my phone out and managed to get a bit of footage.

The saltwater crocodile, which can swim up to 29 km per hour, is the largest living reptile and the largest terrestrial predator on earth.
