The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center Dr. Caroline Chung
The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center has appointed Dr. Caroline Chung, a radiation oncologist, as its vice president and chief data officer, effective Friday.
Chung is the Houston-based cancer center’s first-ever chief data officer.
As chief data officer, Chung will be responsible for developing and implementing the organization’s data strategy, according to a news release. That includes supervising a data governance and provenance office, as well as working with legal, information security, risk and compliance offices to create policies for how the center’s data is used.
MD Anderson created the new chief data officer role to better manage one of the center’s “most valuable strategic assets—our data,” according to David Jaffray, senior vice president and MD Anderson’s first chief technology and digital officer, in a news release, highlighting Chung’s experience leading “data-driven operations and innovations.”
Companies across industries have been adding new C-level executives beyond the traditional chief executive, operating and financial titles, according to an analysis from LinkedIn, which listed chief data officers as one of the 10 most in-demand C-level job titles.
Hospitals in recent years have also been adding leadership roles focused on artificial intelligence, telehealth and other areas of digital transformation.
Chung, an associate professor of radiation oncology and diagnostic radiology, joined MD Anderson in 2016. Since then, she’s served as director of imaging technology and innovation in radiation oncology and co-chair of the tumor measurement initiative, a program to standardize and automate imaging-based measurement of tumors.
“Throughout my career, I have been motivated to deliver patient-centered, data-driven, personalized cancer care that allows our researchers to learn from each patient and ensure we achieve the best outcomes possible—all of which is accomplished through data,” Chung said in the news release.
Chung has also served as co-chair of the organization’s data governance and provenance office and played a critical role in developing a data governance program, according to MD Anderson. She’s held leadership roles in the Radiological Society of North America’s quantitative imaging biomarker alliance and the Alliance for Clinical Trials in Oncology.
