BLACKPINK Jennie’s debut work “The Idol” has been officially canceled after one season

The production of season 2 of HBO’s series “The Idol”, which became a hot topic in Korea due to BLACKPINK Jennie’s appearance, was canceled.

On August 29th (KST), American media outlet Variety reported, “‘The Idol’ won’t get season 2.”

A spokesperson for HBO said, “‘The Idol’ was one of HBO’s most provocative original programs, and we’re pleased by the strong audience response. After much thought and consideration, HBO, as well as the creators and producers have decided not to move forward with a second season.”

“The Idol” is an HBO series produced by famous pop artist The Weeknd. It depicts the relationships surrounding pop idols and the music industry. It was directed and written by Sam Levinson of “Euphoria” and was invited to the Out of Competition section of the 76th Cannes Film Festival last May.

Johnny Depp’s daughter Lily-Rose Depp starred as Jocelyn, while Jennie made her acting debut as Dyanne, a backup dancer and close friend of Jocelyn.

Despite being invited to Cannes and receiving much anticipation, “The Idol” was embroiled in controversy over sensationalism from the first episode.

Jennie appeared in a bra top and short hot pants and performed an unconventional dance with male dancers. The series was also criticized for overlooking the dangers of smoking as many scenes of Jennie smoking appeared.

Besides, other cast members also received criticism for their excessive exposure and provocative bed scenes.

In the end, “The Idol”, which was originally a 6-episode series, ended early after 5 episodes.
