From 2NE1, BLACKPINK, to BABYMONSTER, YG continues “7-Year Cycle” In K-pop Gen 5

YG’s rookie girl group, BABYMONSTER, is ready to stand on the peak of their generation, just like 2NE1 and BLACKPINK did

The confirmation of BABYMONSTER’s debut date has caused a stir in the music industry. BABYMONSTER, consisting of elite members who have undergone professional training for the past four years, will debut on November 27 after overcoming thousands of others to become YG trainees and later join the debut line-up. Expectations are high, especially since it is the first group introduced by YG Entertainment in about seven years after BLACKPINK.

YG Entertainment has produced girl groups who have made history in the music industry. Debuting in 2009, 2NE1, and in 2016, BLACKPINK, attracted attention with distinctive charms that set them apart from girl groups of the times. 2NE1 portrayed a confident and assertive girl crush concept, while BLACKPINK incorporated black into the commonly pretty pink, delivering messages like ‘Don’t just see the pretty side,’ and ‘What you see is not everything.’

2NE1 and BLACKPINK, who debuted seven years apart, proved YG Entertainment’s careful “choice” and “focus”. The two girl groups not only engraved their names in the Korean music industry, but also left a mark in the global market. Particularly, BLACKPINK, accumulating a career that places them among the best girl groups in history, showcased their dominance.

BABYMONSTER is expected to inherits this legacy. With a multinational lineup from Korea, Thailand, and Japan, alongside outstanding vocal, dance, rap, and visual abilities, they have left a mark as a “monster rookie” in K-pop even before debut.

In addition, the fact that Yang Hyun-suk, who has changed and led the trends in the music industry, is focusing on BABYMONSTER adds to the heightened interest.

BABYMONSTER, steadily moving toward its debut date, completed the music video shoot over five days from November 10 to 15. The video reportedly reflects YG Entertainment’s accumulated know-how, and the confidence is full that they will present the best results. YG Entertainment confirmed a debut song in the powerful hip-hop genre, raising expectations for the group’s concept.

With all the capabilities of YG Entertainment concentrated, expectations for BABYMONSTER are natural. And Senior YG artists have not hidden their expectations either.

Earlier, BLACKPINK’s Jennie commented that BABYMONSTER seemed to be good at everything, whilst Lisa expressed her affection by complimenting the member combination, even personally teaching choreography.

Billboard also anticipates that BABYMONSTER will create a new wave in the K-pop genre, selecting them as a “K-pop artist to watch”. Notably, BABYMONSTER’s official YouTube channel has already garnered over 3.17 million subscribers before debut, with a cumulative view count exceeding 450 million.

Now, BABYMONSTER is gradually unveiling itself with visual films and posters for Thai member Chiquita and Japanese member Asa. With the unveiling of BABYMONSTER following 2NE1 and BLACKPINK in 7-year cycles, the group’s potential to make a mark in the history of the music industry is drawing attention.
