Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) entry “Rewind” starring Marian Rivera and Dingdong Dantes officially emerged as the highest-grossing Filipino film of all time as it reached a whopping P889 million in worldwide box-office sales as of Friday, Jan. 26.
Star Cinema reported on Friday that the MMFF entry led by the real-life couple recorded an impressive worldwide gross of P889 million at the box office, surpassing Kathryn Bernardo and Alden Richards-led movie “Hello, Love, Goodbye,” with P880 million in global gross.
Prior to this, “Rewind” first broke records when it became the highest-grossing film in Philippine domestic sales, earning P815 million as of Wednesday, Jan. 17, exceeding the P691 million local box-office sales made by the 2019 movie “Hello, Love, Goodbye.”
“Rewind” is expected to continue to reign in the box office department as it is still in its fifth week, screening across more than 270 cinemas in the Philippines, United Arab Emirates, the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Guam and Saipan.
In December during the Parade of Stars, the Philippine royal couple expressed their hope for “Rewind” to serve as a gift to the viewers, as MMFF brings people together and provides inspiration and joy to families when they watch it together.
“Aside from providing quality entertainment, it’s also a platform to bring people together, bring families together, for families to talk about mga ganitong klaseng kwento papaano ba sila nainspire, and hopefully kahit papaano makapagbigay saya kami sa panahon na ito,” said Dingdong.
“Alam mo kung ano ‘yung pinaka unique dito kung ano ‘yung magiging impact nito pagkatapos nila mapanood doon kami very excited ng asawa ko, kung ano ‘yung maibibigay ng pelikulang ito sa bawat pamilya,” added Marian.
“Rewind” was one of 10 film entries in last year’s MMFF. It tells the story of a married couple struggling to keep their marriage afloat. The 2023 MMFF crossed the P1 billion mark in total box-office sales on Jan. 7.
