"Every Line The Movie I Wrote Myself": Ryan Reynolds Talks Playing Deadpool 'X-Men Origins: Wolverine'

Wade Wilson gets the movie he deserves with “Deadpool” this weekend, but as fans know, the journey has been a tough one. 20th Century Fox first brought the character to life in the woeful “X-Men Origins: Wolverine,” with Ryan Reynolds playing a completely misconceived version of the character — they took the Merc With A Mouth, and sewed his mouth shut. Comic fans were rightfully baffled, and it was bizarre move in a picture that already had its share of problems. Speaking recently on Entertainment Weekly Radio, Reynolds revealed that though his appearance was only meant as a cameo (he was shooting the rom-com “The Proposal” at the same time), he wound up doing more work than expected due to the WGA writer’s strike which happened during production.

“Every line in the movie I wrote myself because in the script that we had it just said, ‘Wade Wilson shows up, talks really fast.’ And it was like, ‘What? What am I supposed to do with that?’ ” he said.

It was a disheartening experience for Reynolds, and he reveals that after the character’s mouth got stitched up, that mostly marked the end of his participation in the film.

“I had fun with the beginning stuff, I felt like that was pretty appropriate for Wade Wilson. It was the latter half where they called an audible at the last minute, and just changed him to this guy with his mouth shut,” he said.
“So if you watch the movie, it’s partly me playing it, and then I was just like, ‘I can’t do this,’ and then they have another actor [play Deadpool]. So you see me in the movie, and it’s me with my shirt off or my mouth sewn shut and I look a little bit more like Dick Van Dyke next to the new guy who is twenty pounds more muscle than me and just this huge martial arts guy, who’s a genius, this guy Scott Adkins, who can just defy gravity,” Reynolds added. “So he actually plays the Deadpool part of that movie.”Reynolds also adds that he warned executives (who, among other things, decided Deadpool should have laser eyes) that fans were going to be upset. He was right.
