Many of America’s favorite male celebs are famous for their enviable cheekbones and chiseled masculine features.
But a new group of Hollywood stars appears to be modeling a surprisingly more puffy, rounded look.
Fans of much-loved heartthrob Ryan Gosling were aghast last month at the premiere of his latest movie, The Fall Guy, when his characteristic angular face appeared a little…fuller.
Speculation was rife that The Notebook star had undergone non-surgical procedures to have dermal fillers injected into his cheeks with the aim of achieving a more youthful appearance.
Now, surgeon-to-the-stars Dr Gary Motykie has told DailyMail.com that Gosling may be just one of a flurry of male celebs who have also got fillers.
Hollywood plastic surgeon Dr Gary Motykie says the ‘chipmunk face’ is an increasing problem among male celebs who are keen to avoid looking gaunt after weight loss.
It is a pattern, he says, that has been partly driven by stars shedding pounds rapidly after taking the blockbuster weight loss drug, Ozempic.
‘You can drop weight pretty quickly on the injections, but then you also lose volume in the face,’ said the LA-based surgeon. ‘Even regaining the weight doesn’t bring the volume back.
‘I’m seeing more patients come in asking for fillers because they have lost weight rapidly and want to re-inject volume. Sometimes it’s from Ozempic, and sometimes it’s just from dieting.’
Below, Dr Motykie details four other celebs who he believes may have done just this…
Tom Cruise, 61
Cruise’s former manager has said he is ‘obsessed with his looks’ and ‘wants to stay youthful’. He is pictured left in 1996 and right in 2019.
Actor Tom Cruise is famous for his strong, angular features which have landed him leading roles in action movies, such as the Mission Impossible series.
But in 2021 the War of the Worlds star appeared at a basketball game in San Francisco, California, with an uncharacteristically puffy face.
Dr Motykie pointed out that this was just two years after he had finished shooting for Top Gun: Maverick, where he displayed an impressively toned figure, and reportedly ate a diet consisting of just 1,200 calories.
Dr Motykie said: ‘What happens is people lose the weight, they feel better, and their body looks better.
‘But when they are in their 30s, 40s and 50s, the face doesn’t recover quite so well and they appear gaunt, so they have to turn to fillers to turn the volume back.’
Fillers are chemicals injected into the face to boost volume and smooth wrinkles, helping patients to appear younger.
They contain a naturally occurring ingredient called hyaluronic acid, which draws water from the surrounding skin, filling out the area.
Daniel Craig, 56
Daniel Craig was among stars that suddenly appeared with a puffier face. He has repeatedly embarked on extreme weight loss programs for James Bond roles, which may have contributed to a gaunt face. Daniel Craig has never confirmed using fillers
Daniel Craig embarked on extreme weight loss programs no fewer than five times to play British secret service agent James Bond in the major movie franchise.
But plastic surgeons say this would have led to a permanent loss of volume in his face causing a more gaunt appearance.
Dr Motykie said he likely received fillers to combat this and give himself a ‘fuller’ facial appearance.
‘Daniel Craig did start to look a bit gaunt in his 40s and upwards,’ he said, ‘when you lose all that weight it really shows up in the face’. However, Dr Motykie points out that, from around 2018 onwards, Craig’s face seemed to miraculously balloon in the cheek area.
Fillers can initially cause a ‘puffy’ and ‘fuller’ face, the surgeon said, because they suck in fluid from surrounding tissue that collects in the face.
This eases within a few days to weeks as the body redistributes the fluid and inflammation declines, but there is a lag-time where the face appears ‘poofy’.
Many stars hide away during this period, Dr Motykie said, but some can have their ‘hand caught in the cookie jar’ if they step out in public too early.
Zac Efron, 36
2018 and 2023: Zac is pictured above in 2018 at the Golden Globe Awards in Los Angeles and in 2023 during an interview for Entertainment Weekly. Zac Efron has never confirmed using fillers
The High School Musical star is no stranger to speculation about his changing appearance.
In 2021, Zac Efron suddenly debuted a new jawline, which he said was because of reconstructive surgery following a nasty fall that had ‘shattered his jaw’. In late 2023, he also appeared with a puffier face.
Dr Motykie said it was almost certain that Efron had received fillers in his face — possibly to replace volume lost from diets aimed to reduce fat.
But the plastic surgeon said it was also possible that the star’s puffier appearance could be linked to hormone or testosterone shots, which the star is also speculated to have used.
‘It may be that he lost the weight and then tried to put it back’ said Dr Motykie, ‘but could not regain volume in his face’.
Zac has faced repeated speculation about plastic surgery after he appeared with an altered jawline, but he has denied all the suggestions.
David Beckham, 48
It was also alleged that David Beckham has had facial fillers. David Beckham has never confirmed that he used fillers
David Beckham, 48, was the pretty boy of soccer, famed for his angular jaw and sharp cheekbones.
But in 2023 he appeared at the UK premiere of the movie ‘Beckham’ modeling a much fuller face.
Dr Motykie said his face may have thinned out as a result of losing weight for his copious fashion shoots — with the star then turning to filler to regain volume.
Ryan Gosling, 43
Has Gosling been primping and pumping, some wonder. He looks more like Amy Schumer than the fine-featured leading man we all adore, others say
He’s hung up Ken’s Stetson but Ryan Gosling’s apparent passion for plastic might extend beyond playing Barbie’s boyfriend.
With a waxy shine and seemingly inflated cheeks, 43-year-old Gosling is causing something of a stir among disconcerted fans on social media.
Has he been primping and pumping, some wonder. He looks more like Amy Schumer than the fine-featured leading man we all adore, others say.
The speculation began after he stepped out for the launch of Fall Guy in Austin, Texas, last month.
Dr Motykie said Gosling may have also been caught out after stepping out too early after fillers.
He said surgeons often recommend having them gradually put in so that the shift in features is not so notable.
But in the case of some celebrities, surgeons may end up putting in a larger amount at once if they have to appear at an event and do not wish to look gaunt.
