OPM singer Martin Nievera revealed he had contemplated taking his own life twice, once when his parents separated when he was young, and when he broke up with his former wife, fellow singer Pops Fernandez.
Sitting down recently with Aster Amoyo, Nievera recalled the times he had thought of committing suicide, as he said that his relationship being public made it harder than the experience with his parents.
“The separation of my mom and dad happened without the world knowing. But the separation of Pops and Martin was so public. That was the one that was hard,” he said.
“Siyempre it’s the guy who messed around. It’s the girl ang bida. I am the kontrabida. I am not used to being kontrabida. I thought I was everybody’s friend,” continued the singer.
Given that his parents were his relationship role models, Nievera remarked that it immensely affected him when they went separate ways, and all the more when he broke up with Fernandez with the whole world watching.
“Personally, it was a big blow for me because role models ko ang parents ko. I’ve seen them from good days through bad, and they survived. So affected talaga ako,” he expressed.
“But when Pops and I separated, mas grabe. I had to do it all in front of you. Today, the kids would say when their parents are separated, ‘Okay. What’s next? Ano ang susunod?’ That’s today. But back in the day of Pops and Martin, it’s like a marriage made in heaven, right?” he added.
Amid his dark thoughts, Nievera also thought his separation from Fernandez would also mark the end of his showbiz career.
“I didn’t care what I did. My hair was red. I looked like Ronald McDonald. Nagalit ako sa mundo because hindi nila nakita ang side ko. I wasn’t important,” he expressed.
Nievera and Fernandez were married for 14 years before calling it quits in 2000. They shared two children together and remained friends to this day.
