Many fans were surprised by recent news from Medwin Marfil, the vocalist of the iconic ’90s band True Faith, after he announced his marriage to his high school batchmate, Mark Angeles.
To celebrate Pride Month, Nelson Canlas invited the couple to his exclusive podcast, Updated with Nelson Canlas, where Medwin and Mark took the opportunity to share more about their love story.
During their conversation, Medwin revealed his decision to come out as a way to inspire and support his fans, particularly those in the LGBTQIA+ community.
“Maybe me coming out would ,you know, would enlighten people, would be of help, would make them understand. Nang naging kami ni Marc, maybe it’s time na I come out and be proud of myself,” he explained.
They began as a long distance relationship couple, with Mark in the United States and Medwin in the Philippines. They maintained their connection through video calls and occasional visits to each other’s countries.
Transitioning into a more permanent arrangement required careful planning, especially regarding Medwin’s career in the band.
“It took a while like kailangan kong unti-untiin sa bandmates ko na, ‘Oh I already have this relationship na parang one of these days I’m gonna have to go back there and stay for a length in a year and then get married. You know fix my personal life.’ It took a while para ma-accept nila kasi I just don’t want na biglang alis ako,” Medwin shared.
The couple decided to get married before Medwin returned to the Philippines from the States, as Mark envisioned a long term future together. The wedding was arranged swiftly, with only two weeks of preparation.
When asked about their decision to have a formal ceremony, Mark explained, “Para ma-solidify, formalizing ‘yung commitment .”
Medwin added, “Sa tingin namin na parang, if it’s something that straight couples wanted to do, then if they can do it, why not?”
The newlyweds recognized that in today’s society, more individuals are exercising their freedom to choose whether to disclose their relationships. Medwin wanted to set an example to everyone that it’s okay to openly share who you love and showcase a loving relationship.
“Ang importante is if you’re a good person you know. If you’re a good artist, they wanted to express your opinion then go ahead but it’s not our reality. It’s not who we are,” Medwin said.
