Adele’s son doesn’t know his mum is mega-famous – and thinks way more people like Taylor Swift.
The Easy On Me singer shares nine-year-old son Angelo with her ex-husband Simon Konecki, and keeps him out of the spotlight.
While Adele is one of the world’s most famous singers, a multi-Grammy award winner and a woman who can sell out Hyde Park in minutes at £90 a ticket, her son hasn’t yet grasped that his mum is The Adele, and is only just ‘starting to get’ that she’s rather well-liked.
In her interview with Oprah Winfrey as part of the CBS special Adele: One Night Only, Oprah asked: ‘So does Angelo know that you are Adele?’
Adele, 33, said: ‘The other day, he watched the Easy On Me video countdown… and he was like, “There was 150,000 people waiting!” Then he read the comments and he was like, “People really like you!”
‘So he’s starting to get it a little bit, but not really.’
Adele took Angelo to see fellow Grammy-winner Taylor Swift on her Reputation tour in 2018, and Angelo was stunned to see thousands of people there – because he’s only ever seen his mum in rehearsals.
Oprah asked: ‘Didn’t you take him to a Taylor Swift concert and he was like… couldn’t believe that all those people were there?’
The Someone Like You singer laughed: ‘Because he used to come to my stadium shows for my rehearsals and it’d be empty. He’s like, “So many people come to her shows,” ’cause I’d make him leave before they all arrived. It was so cute and so funny.’
However, Angelo now has seen his mum properly perform, having attended the CBS taping at Griffith Observatory in Los Angeles last month.
Adele shouted out her son after explaining it was the first time he’d seen her perform, saying: ‘It’s the absolute honour of my life to have you here tonight baby.’
Also during the Oprah sit-down – which took place in the same rose garden where Oprah interviewed Prince Harry and Meghan Markle – Adele discussed her divorce from Simon, and how she felt ‘embarrassed’ by her marriage ending.
The star, who split from the charity CEO in April 2019 after eight years together and under a year of marriage, said: ‘I’ve been obsessed with a nuclear family my whole life because I never came from one.
‘From a very young age I promised myself that when I had kids we’d stay together and we would be that united family and I tried for a really really long time.
‘I was just so disappointed for my son, I was disappointed for myself.’
Adele and Simon remain friends, and they are co-parenting Angelo, with Simon buying a house across the road from his ex-wife.
The singer is now in a relationship with sports agent Rich Paul, and she said that it is the first time she has been ‘open to being loved’.
