The 41-year-old has opened up about the ‘pain’ of trying for a baby in Vanity Fair, where she spoke about fertility struggles and what she went through. The celebrity was in the off-Broadway play back in April 2015 and the production ran for several weeks. Anne Hathaway wanted to speak out about her miscarriage to raise awareness about the lack of support and information for people who endure the loss.

Anne Hathaway, married to Adam Shulman, suffered a miscarriage in 2015. The celebrity couple share two children together, sons Jonathan and Jack, who are seven and three years old.

At the time, the movie star was starring in Grounded. It was a one-woman play about a female US Air Force pilot who is grounded when she becomes pregnant. Written by George Brant, it ran for six weeks.

She told Vanity Fair: “The first time it didn’t work out for me. I was doing a play and I had to give birth onstage every night.”

She added: “It was too much to keep it in when I was onstage pretending everything was fine. I had to keep it real otherwise….

“So when it did go well for me, having been on the other side of it – where you have to have the grace to be happy for someone – I wanted to let my sisters know, ‘You don’t have to always be graceful. I see you and I’ve been you.”

Anne Hathaway reveals she had miscarriage during show about motherhood

The outlet says she was tearing up as she spoke. Anne continued: “It’s really hard to want something so much and to wonder if you’re doing something wrong.”

Anne Hathaway wanted to open up over her miscarriage after feeling there wasn’t enough resources and support for people who lose a baby during pregnancy.

The Devil Wears Prada star went on: “That’s where we take on damage. So I decided that I was going to talk about it.

“The thing that broke my heart, blew my mind, and gave me hope was that for three years after, almost daily, a woman came up to me in tears and I would just hold her, because she was carrying this [pain] around and suddenly it wasn’t all hers anymore.”

The Hollywood star first hinted fertility struggles in July 2019 when she announced she was pregnant with her second child.

At the time she posted a photo of her baby bump on Instagram but offered support to other women as well.

The Batman star wrote: “It’s not for a movie… #2 All kidding aside, for everyone going through infertility and conception hell, please know it was not a straight line to either of my pregnancies. Sending you extra love.”

Aside from Anne Hathaway bravely speaking about her miscarriage, she also opened up over having children in 2022.

She spoke with WSJ Magazine about how the journey into motherhood can be ‘complicated’.

“There’s this tendency to portray getting pregnant, having kids, in one light, as if it’s all positive,” she said.

“But I know from my own experience…it’s so much more complicated than that. When you find out that your pain is shared by others…I just feel that’s helpful information to have, so I’m not isolated in my pain.”
