Chris Hemsworth Confirms He'll Keep Playing Thor Beyond Love and Thunder

Chris Hemsworth has stated his desire to stay on as Thor beyond Thor: Love and Thunder, in good news for fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

There’s no doubting that the MCU is heading towards something of a transition period, with both Robert Downey Jr and Chris Evans confirming they’ve finished with their roles as Iron Man and Captain America respectively.

Hemsworth, however, will remain on board to welcome the new influx of superheroes, with the 37 year-old actor telling Poland’s Elle Man he had no plans to retire from the franchise series just yet.

The Australian – who has played the character of Thor since 2011 across eight films – is clearly still as enthusiastic as ever about being involved.

When asked if Love and Thunder would be his final film as Thor, Hemsworth said: “Are you crazy?! I’m not going into any retirement period.

“Thor is way too young for that. I’m only 1500 years old! It is definitely not a film that I say goodbye to this brand. At least I hope so.”

Hemsworth spoke with excitement about the film – now scheduled for release in 2022.

“I’m glad that after all that happened in Avengers: Endgame, I’m still part of the Marvel Universe and we can continue the story of Thor.

“Of course, I can’t tell you anything about the plot, but to satisfy your curiosity, I’ll say that I had a lot more fun reading the script than on Thor: Ragnarok, and that proves something, because that movie was brilliant.”

His anticipation has been shared by the film’s director Taika Waititi, who recently spoke to Tessa Thompson (who plays Valkyrie in the MCU) on Instagram.

He said: “It makes Ragnarok feel like a really run-of-the-mill, really safe film. This new movie feels like we asked a bunch of 10-year-olds what they wanted to see and then just said yes to every single thing.”

As ever with the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Thor: Love and Thunder is one of several films in the pipeline.

Next up for the franchise is the Scarlett Johansson-starring Black Widow, coming out for UK audiences next month, with The Eternals set to follow in early 2021. It stars Angelina Jolie in her first appearance in the MCU, as part of an ensemble cast.
