After the 2024 Royal Rumble, things are not looking good for the upcoming main event WrestleMania 40 as WWE has faced several major setbacks in a short span. Earlier, Triple H created a few exciting storylines to build up the hype for the pay-per-view event, but the recent setbacks may demolish the grand design of the previous plans.
With a surprising return In the first Raw event of 2024, Dwayne Johnson interrupted Jinder Mahal (who also marked his recent return to the company) and announced a match with the Universal champion Roman Reigns. However, that was not the only match to be excited about. Fans may miss a few other potential matches as well.
Will Dwayne Johnson vs. Roman Reigns Happen in WrestleMania 40?
Dwayne Johnson’s 2024 return was surprising, but he has always been hailed by fans well. The Hollywood action star returned by the end of 2023, but his new year return to the red brand has created a huge buzz as he announced his aim for the head of the table. However, the hype may not last too long as Roman Reigns’ cousin The Rock is a busy man with his acting career and several businesses under his belt, and the potential dream match with the undisputed champion could easily be shattered.
Also, since his WWE return, the American Nightmare, Cody Rhodes, has mesmerized fans with his promotion and matches. His remarkable win defeating the Beast Incarnate Brock Lesnar was one of the most highlighting essences in his career since his WWE return. But his 2024 Royal Rumble win is a clear indication that the superstar is going after the Tribal Chief’s title as he clearly pointed his finger towards Reigns’ belt. That means Johnson vs. Reigns may never happen.
Other WrestleMania 40 Dream Matches May Shatter Fans’ Expectations
As Johnson vs. Reigns is very unlikely to be on the cards, other dream matches may shatter fans’ expectations. CM Punk’s WWE return in Survivor Series last year, nearly after a decade-long hiatus, has immediately established a feud with the inaugural World Heavyweight Champion Seth “Freakin” Rollins.
The feud looked so real as fans immediately thought a Punk vs. Rollins match was on the cards in an upcoming main event, and what better spot to put the dream match other than WrestleMania 40? However, as per a recent report, after his Royal Rumble brawl in the ring, he suffered a torn triceps that could keep him out of the limelight for at least a few months. So, another dream match is off the table.
WWE’s ultimate backup plan with part-timer Lesnar is also diminished following his name appearing in the Janel Grant lawsuit against Vince McMahon. Lesnar was reportedly set to appear in the 2024 Royal Rumble, but Bron Breakker replaced the former champion. WWE has reportedly canceled Lesnar’s potential match against Judgment Day’s Dirty Dom a.k.a. Dominik Mysterio or another Lesnar vs. Imperium leader Gunther match. With all these canceled matches, WWE creatives have to come up with immediate new plans to revamp the upcoming premium event.
