There’s a new Filipino talent in Hollywood!
Amazon Prime has released the official trailer of its upcoming drama series Expats, which has Hollywood actress Nicole Kidman in the lead playing the role of a woman who has moved her whole family to Hong Kong.
The six-episode series depicts a group of women whose whole lives change after a single encounter sets off a chain of events that leaves everyone navigating the intricate balance between blame and accountability.
Alongside Kidman is veteran Filipina actress Ruby Ruiz, who plays a helper to Marget’s family. Some well-known projects that Ruiz has starred in before include Eerie, Maria Leonora Teresa, Ang Probinsyano, and the Filipino version of Miracle in Cell No. 7.
Replying to Prime Video’s post on Instagram, Ruiz said the film is a “milestone” of hers.
“Can’t believe it’s finally out !!!! Expats is a milestone,” she left in the comments section, to which the streaming service replied: “Our Lola Pilar takes on Hollywood! We are beyond proud! Looking forward to the emotional ride that you’ve prepared for us, Ms. Ruby!”
Ruiz is now following in the footsteps of other Filipino actresses who have landed a role in a Hollywood project. Dolly de Leon previously gained prominence for her character in the satirical black comedy Triangle of Sadness, wherein she became the first Filipino actor to be nominated for the BAFTAs and Golden Globe Awards.
Liza Soberano is also set to star in her first Hollywood film in 2024. She was cast to be a part of the horror comedy film Lisa Frankenstein along with Kathryn Newton and Cole Sprouse.
Based on the 2016 novel by Janice Y. K. Lee, Expats will premiere on Amazon Prime on Jan. 26.
