There’s no denying that Melai Cantiveros made a mark in her first Asia Artist Awards appearance. Not only did she tickle the funny bones of the crowd with her “valedictorian” interview and speech, but she also caught the attention of Korean superstars Kim Seon-ho and NewJeans.
Melai was an attendee during the 8th Asia Artist Awards that was held at the Philippine Arena in Bulacan on Dec. 14. At some point during the show, IVE member Jan Won-young, who served as one of the hosts for the night, approached Melai for a brief interview and asked her how she is feeling at getting a chance to attend the historic show.
“Attending to AAA is a very honor. I feel like I am the first honor, a valedictorian in attending AAA. It’s so the best, prestigious award. I cannot believe this is happening.
Jan then asked, “There are many artists representing Asia here today. Is there any particular artist you would really like to meet?”
“I’m so very idol Kim Seon-ho and NewJeans, because my daughter loves NewJeans,” Melai responded.
In photos captured by audience members, Kim, who is most known for his roles in Start-Up and Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha, had the cutest reaction to Melai’s answer at wanting meet him. He could be seen turning around to look at her way with a delighted smile on his face.
The girls of K-pop powerhouse NewJeans—Minji, Hanni, Danielle, Haerin, and Hyein—similarly had an adorable reaction at the local star wanting to meet them.
In a video, the five artists could be seen covering their mouths with their hands as soon as their group’s name was mentioned by Melai before waving at her in excitement.
Melai later had her wish come true when she got a chance to encounter the group during the show and exchanged pleasantries with them.
Later in the show, Melai became a recipient of the AAA Best Actor Award alongside Korean actors Kim Sejong, Ahn Hyo Seop, Lee Dong Hwi, and Lee Jun Hyuk. In her speech, the Filipino comedian said she is “overwhelmed” to receive such recognition.
“If someone questions why I have award, don’t worry, I question too,” she said, earning laughs and cheers from the crowd. “Tonight, my heart is very kuan… the best. I think because God moves in mysterious ways.”
Aside from Melai, other Filipino talents were recognized during the prestigious event, including Kathryn Bernardo, Daniel Padilla, SB19, HORI7ON, and Ben&Ben.
