A mismatched story? A case of he said, she said?
These seem to be the ending of the reel and real-life romance of Kyline Alcantara and Mavy Legaspi.
On the surface, the MavLine love team looked promising, what with a growing fan base and a home network willing to back them up.
Kyline and Mavy started as good friends, were comfortable with each other, and in a situation deemed to be an ideal foundation for a romantic relationship.
Now, the two are being rocked by intrigues that appear personal.
No confirmation has been made thus far on whether Kyline and Mavy’s relationship, as friends or lovers, is indeed over and beyond repair.
But based on the rumors going around, all signs indicate that Kyline and Mavy will most likely go their separate ways in their careers and personal lives.
Their fans are, of course, hoping for the best and are hanging on until both parties confirm or deny the separation rumors.
But before that, PEP.ph (Philippine Entertainment Portal) looks back at Kyline and Mavy’s journey that unfolded on social media—from friendship and rumored romance to a fallout.
KYLINE AND MAVY’S BLOOMING FRIENDSHIP
Kyline and Mavy first met years ago at an acting workshop not as students but as spectators.
At the time, Kyline was already an actress while Mavy and his twin sister Cassy, kids of actors Carmina Villarroel and Zoren Legaspi, had yet to enter showbiz.
Kyine recalled in an interview for PEP Live in August 2023, “Feeling ko, porke’t nakatrabaho ko na nanay nila, close na ako sa kanila.
“So sabi ko sa kanila, ‘Hi, guys! Hi, Mavy! Hi, Cassy!’ Tapos si Cassy, ‘Uy, hello!’ Si Mavy, ‘Uy!'”
Initially, Kyline found Mavy snobbish, the opposite of his sister who was “madaldal” during that encounter.
Said Kyline, “So parang yung unang impression ko sa kanya… Siguro ako may thinking na parang pag showbiz family tapos may anak, ang laki ng ulo, mahangin, mayabang.”
On the other hand, though he wouldn’t say it at the time, Mavy was drawn to Kyline’s dimples and fair skin .
Mavy said, “Exactly! Lagi ko to sinasabi kay Kyline, nung unang tingin medyo tumibok yung puso ko. ‘Wow, napakaganda niya.'”
Fast forward to 2018, Cassy and Mavy had signed with GMA Network and would join other young Kapuso talents, including Kyline, in the weekend variety show Studio 7.
After spending long hours together during rehearsals and tapings, Kyline and Mavy soon developed a bond as friends and would hang out together more frequently.
Kyline said in an interview for Surprise Guest with Pia Arcangel, “Even before pa, lumalabas na po talaga kami lagi.
“Binibisita ko po sila sa house nila, binibisita rin nila yung house ko, its really not for publicity. Sadyang hindi lang po talaga namin pino-post before.”
Studio 7 folded in December 2019, but Kyline and Mavy’s friendship flourished and moved gradually beyond the platonic stage.
KYLINE AND MAVY’S ROMANCE RUMORS
By June 2021, netizens started guessing that something was going on between the two.
That month, Mavy posted a photo on Instagram showing him smiling and winking before the camera, with someone in a denim jacket poking his dimple.
Wrote Mavy in the caption, “They say, ‘happiness is having dimples’ but to me, happiness is being around her.”
Netizens assumed Kyline was the person Mavy was referring to in his post.
Mavy’s sister Cassy joined the fun in the comments section, asking, “So sino si ‘her’?”
Mavy gamely replied, “Last time I checked, you took the pic.”
But the clincher was a picture that Mavy posted on Instagram two days later—a close-up of another person’s cheek, a girl with her dimple being poked by Mavy.
His comment, “Her. Her smile. Her dimples. Yup, that’s the post,” gave Mavy away.
“Si [Kyline] iyan. Halatang-halata na. [Pisngi] palang,” said a netizen.
WHAT’S THE REAL SCORE?
Kyline, in a vlod she released in December 2021, opened up about the status of her relationship with Mavy.
The two were then the love team in the GMA-7 prime-time series, I Left My Heart In Sorsogon, which is top-billed by Heart Evangelista and Richard Yap.
“It’s a yes!” Kyline replied when asked if she and Mavy were in a relationship.
However, she didn not exactly label their relationship as boyfriend-girlfriend.
“It’s like friendship na relationship. Kung ano meron kami ngayon, it’s really our own,” said Kyline.
She added, “The fact that he’s always there even though ilang beses ko siya pinu-push away. Kung alam niyo lang, he’s always there.”
Mavy, meanwhile, was more straightforward with his answers, particularly about the moment he realized he wanted to be more than friends with the Kapuso actress.
He recalled, “May event kami pinuntahan ni Cassy, tapos kasama si Ky. Tapos andun yung Honne (an electronic music duo from London), and after that, tumibok na yung puso ko.
“Lakas ng loob ko! Di ko alam kung saan ko nakukuha yung confidence. Minsan, pag may mga banat ako, ‘Ba’t ko sinabi yun?’
“Parang minsan nakaka-cringe dati. Siyempre dati bata pa ako. First meeting namin, 16 or 17 years old lang ako.”
COURTSHIP STAGE
Kyline and Mavy continued to play coy every time they were asked about their relationship.
Fans, however, were convinced that the two were already an item, but they preferred to keep it under wraps.
In 2022, when Kyline was chosen to be a Filipino celebrity ambassador by the Korea Tourism Organization (KTO), Mavy reportedly booked a flight to South Korea to be with her.
According to reports, he was introduced as “my boyfriend” to people they would encounter in South Korea.
Rumor also had it that Kyline’s term of endearment to Mavy was “Love.”
“Siguro tini-testing lang ni Kyline,” Mavy teasingly told PEP in a backstage interview on March 18, 2023, during a mall event.
“Siyempre, kinikilig ako! Pero, inaano ko yun… I look at it maturely.
“Siyempre, di mo naman talaga maalis na merong moments na parang napapa-‘Love…'”
Mavy, for his part, had always been open about his feelings for the actress.
He confided, “Ah, siyempre, noon pa man lagi kong sinasabi kay Kyline na laging nadi-develop yung feelings ko sa kanya the more I’m getting to know her.
“Lalo na kapag nakikita ko siya sa set, mas lalo akong napu-fall sa kanya.
“As I’ve always said in the past, na it’s my dream na maka-work si Kyline at nakikita ko face-to-face as partner ko. It’s the best feeling at ang dami kong natutunan.”
Kyline confirmed, “We’re almost together every day,” adding there’s no “sawaan portion.”
She stressed further, “We enjoy each other’s presence. And we really help each other when it comes to emotions, off and on cam. Siguro we become stronger now.”
MAVY’S SINCERE INTENTIONS
Like many of today’s celebrities, social media became Mavy’s outlet to let the public know about his moments with Kyline.
And fans couldn’t get enough of “MavLine” having fun and going on adventures together, thrilled to see a snap showing Mavy carrying Kyline on his back.
Skeptics, however, were up and about. They dismissed those sweet moments as just for show, a gimmick to boost their love team’s appeal to starstruck fans who fancied seeing the two young stars in love with each other for real.
In March 2023, Mavy told entertainment reporter Nelson Canlas, “For the first time, na-affect din ako doon in a little way.
“Kasi alam ko genuine at totoo iyong ginagawa ko para kay Kyline. It just so happens we live in a world where social media is so big na.
“Lahat ng action, nabo-broadcast sa social media or may mga stolen shots blah blah blah na people can twist around.”
Mavy admitted the harsh comments had taken a heavy toll on him.
Ignoring the bashers, he found comfort where it counted the most for him.
Talking about Kyline, he said, “But at the end of the day, it’s her reaction and it’s the way she appreciates my gesture that just turns everything around.
“What’s important to me is I see her smile on her face, so sapat na iyon sa akin.”
TAKING THINGS SLOW
On June 12, 2023, in an episode of Fast Talk with Boy Abunda, Kyline once again stressed that she and Mavy were not a couple.
She told the host, “He’s courting me po, andun pa lang kami sa courting stage.
“It might be cliché, but we’re really taking things slower than before.”
When asked what name would be written in her heart, Kyline replied without hesitation, “Mavy Legaspi.”
Kyline and Mavy revealed just how confusing their relationship had been when they appeared on PEP Live in August 2023.
Kyline described Mavy as “torpe” who would express his feelings only to take them back, leaving her wondering if Mavy meant what he said or was just taking her for a ride.
She recalled, “Ganito po siya—tawanan kami, tapos sasabihin niya, ‘I like you… Joke lang!’ As a person, mako-confuse ka.”
Mavy retorted, “May mga face-palm moments talaga ako, pag binabawi ko, ‘Wee… Naniwala ka naman?’
“Tapos ako, [sa isip ko], ‘Ba’t ko sinabi ko, naniwala ka naman? Dapat sinabi mo na lang ang ganda mo, totoo naman.'”
Although the PEP Live interview somehow gave the impression that the two were a couple, they also gave vague and conflicting statements about the true status of their relationship.
At the same time, their guesting also showed Kyline and Mavy in their element, and, at least, in the eyes of the viewers, in love with each other.
They told a story about their heart-to-heart talk during a break when they were taping I Left My Heart in Sorsogon.
Both of them related how that conversation led to “aminan ng feelings.”
Kyline would later reveal in her podcast, dated September 2022, that Mavy waited two years before they became a couple.
FRIENDSHIP IN PERIL
But just when it seemed that the MavLine ship was sailing smoothly came the news that baffled fans.
On August 14, 2023, Kyline and Cassy, Mavy’s sister, had unfollowed each other on Instagram.
This puzzled many as Kyline and Cassy, as far as everyone knew, had been friends for years since their Studio 7 days.
One netizen theorized, “Baka naman kaya may issue si Kyline at Cassy ay dahil medyo malapit si Kyline sa rumored ex ni Cassy na si Yohan Go!?”
No one knew who Yohan Go was, which didn’t help answer the question why they unfollowed each other.
Cassy spoke briefly about the issue in a press conference for the film When I Met You In Tokyo in November.
“I think, civil po,” Cassy told reporters when asked about her relationship with Kyline.
Cassy refused to elaborate further, raising more questions than answers.
CRYPTIC POSTS
On November 25, 2023, Carmina posted this letter on X (formerly Twitter) dedicated to her kids, Mavy and Cassy.
Her tweet read, “People can destroy your image, damage your personality, create rumors about you but they can never take away your good deeds.
“Because no matter how they describe you, you will always be admired by those who know you best.”
Netizens didn’t know what to make of Carmina’s post.
Was Carmina simply advising her children as they now navigate the intrigue-filled world of showbiz? Or was she alluding to specific incidents involving her kids?
Meanwhile, Kyline on the same day posted on X, “I knew it.”
Carmina on November 26, 2023, wrote on X, “Mom knows best.”
By this time, speculations that there was tension between Mavy and Kyline were heating up, and talks that the two had broken up were gaining traction.
Talks linking Mavy to Eat Bulaga co-hosts Dasuri Choi also emerged after a video of the two with Cassy and Michael Sager dining out went online.
Both Carmina and Kyline were not done yet as both continued to post cryptic messages on social media.
“I was taught that keeping quiet kept the peace. Until I realized, [whose] peace is it keeping,” Kyline wrote on November 28, 2023.
Carmina the next day also took to X to say, “Protect your peace.”
Many were now convinced that Carmina and Kyline were throwing shade at each other, and that Kyline and Mavy’s relationship was finished.
Despite the issues, Mavy and Kyline were together onstage for an event mounted by a soft-drink brand.
The photos were posted on Instagram by Sparkle, the talent management arm of GMA Network, on December 4, 2023.
The tension between the two Kapuso stars was palpable as observed in the videos that were taken from the event.
They did not really interact with each other.
An article published by PEP on November 30, 2023, stated that Mavy and Kyline were set to issue a joint statement to address the rumor surrounding their relationship.
Up to now, MavLine fans are waiting with bated breaths.
