Greta Gerwig’s ‘Barbie’ may not have any immediate plans for a sequel, however, Margot Robbie seems to be somewhat open to the idea.
In an interview with Variety, Margot Robbie commented on the success and impact of Barbie.
Dressed as the 1977 “Superstar Barbie”, Robbie shares her gratitude for the $1.4 billion ticket sales accumulated from the film, and what that represents.
“Seeing this sea of people wearing pink or dressed up as Ken, it was such a wild feeling, and I haven’t seen this communal kind of experience at the theatres since I was a kid.”
Barbie has become the highest-grossing film of 2023, the 14th highest-grossing of all time and the highest-grossing film by a solo female director, Greta Gerwig.
With its numerous accolades and unequivocal success, it’s interesting that both Gerwig and Robbie haven’t shared more about expanding the franchise.

However, when asked about a sequel Robbie laughs along and states “We’ll see.”
In an interview with Time back in June 2023, Robbie shared that she had been involved in conversations about possible sequels, yet also how that wasn’t the case when making Barbie.
“I think you fall into a bit of a trap if you try and set up a first movie whilst also planning for sequels.”
Although not much has been said about Barbie, there are comments about a Ken spinoff by the likes of Gerwig herself and Ryan Gosling, who did an amazing performance of Ken.
Gerwig expressed that they ‘’had way too much material for Ken. We would write and write and write’.
