How Does Cysticercosis Occur?

Contrary to a common misconception, people do not usually develop cysticercosis simply by eating pork itself. The infection occurs when microscopic tapeworm eggs are accidentally ingested, often through contaminated food, water, or poor hygiene practices.

Once inside the body, the eggs hatch into larvae, which can travel through the bloodstream and become lodged in muscles, skin, eyes, or even the brain. There they develop into fluid-filled cysts.
