According to health experts, millions of people may have low vitamin D levels without even realizing it.
The problem is that vitamin D deficiency rarely causes obvious symptoms at first. Instead, the body sends subtle signals that are often ignored or blamed on stress and exhaustion. Over time, these warning signs can become more serious and affect overall health.
One of the most common signs is persistent fatigue. Even after getting enough sleep, people with low vitamin D may feel constantly tired or mentally drained. Doctors say vitamin D plays an important role in energy regulation and immune function, which is why deficiency can affect daily performance.
Bone and muscle pain are also major warning signs. Vitamin D helps the body absorb calcium properly, supporting strong bones and muscles. Without enough vitamin D, some people experience lower back pain, joint discomfort, or unexplained muscle weakness. In severe cases, bones may become fragile and more likely to fracture.
Another overlooked symptom is frequent illness. Low vitamin D levels may weaken the immune system, making the body more vulnerable to infections such as colds, flu, and respiratory problems. Some studies suggest that maintaining healthy vitamin D levels may help support stronger immune defenses.
Mood changes can also be linked to deficiency. Doctors explain that vitamin D may influence brain function and emotional regulation. People with low levels sometimes report increased anxiety, sadness, irritability, or symptoms associated with depression, especially during seasons with limited sunlight.
Hair thinning or excessive hair loss may be another clue. Although hair loss can have many causes, research suggests severe vitamin D deficiency may affect hair follicle health in some individuals. Slow wound healing is another possible symptom because vitamin D contributes to skin repair and inflammation control.
Some people also experience excessive sweating, particularly around the head. This unusual symptom has long been associated with low vitamin D levels in both adults and children. Muscle cramps, tingling sensations, and poor balance may also occur as deficiency worsens.
Doctors are especially concerned about deficiency in older adults because low vitamin D levels may contribute to osteoporosis and increased fall risks. Children who lack sufficient vitamin D may develop weak bones and growth problems.
Several factors can increase deficiency risk, including spending little time outdoors, using strong sunscreen constantly, obesity, aging, darker skin tone, and digestive disorders that reduce nutrient absorption. People living in areas with limited sunlight may also face greater risk during colder months.
Health experts recommend getting moderate sunlight exposure, eating vitamin D-rich foods, and discussing supplements with a doctor if necessary. Foods such as salmon, eggs, fortified milk, tuna, and mushrooms may help support healthier vitamin D levels.
Regular blood testing can also help identify deficiencies early before complications become severe. Doctors warn that self-diagnosing without medical advice may lead to excessive supplement use, which can also be harmful.
