12-Year-Old Girl’s Lung Turns White Within a Day After Mild Fever: Doctors Warn Parents Not to Assume It’s Just a Cold

A seemingly mild fever in a 12-year-old girl rapidly developed into a life-threatening respiratory emergency, leaving doctors urging parents to take persistent cold-like symptoms in children more seriously.

Many parents believe that a mild fever, cough, or runny nose is simply a seasonal cold. However, a recent case involving a 12-year-old girl highlights how quickly a child's condition can deteriorate when a serious infection is mistaken for a common illness.

According to the report, the girl initially developed a fever of approximately 38°C and mild respiratory symptoms. Her family assumed she had caught a common cold and allowed her to rest at home. However, within the next 24 hours, her condition worsened dramatically.

She began experiencing significant breathing difficulties, chest discomfort, and persistent fever reaching nearly 39°C. Alarmed by the rapid progression of symptoms, her family rushed her to the hospital for emergency treatment.

Upon arrival, doctors found that the child was suffering from severe oxygen deprivation. Her blood oxygen levels had dropped dangerously low, requiring immediate oxygen support. Further examination revealed a shocking discovery: one of her lungs appeared almost completely white on chest X-rays, a sign of extensive inflammation and infection.

Medical specialists diagnosed the girl with severe plastic bronchitis, a rare but potentially life-threatening respiratory condition. In this disease, thick mucus and inflammatory material form rubbery casts inside the airways. These casts can block the bronchial tubes, preventing air from reaching parts of the lungs.

A multidisciplinary team of doctors quickly performed emergency bronchoscopic procedures to remove the obstructive material from her airways. During the procedure, physicians extracted large amounts of thick mucus and inflammatory debris that had blocked normal airflow.
