What About Washing Underwear by Hand?

Hand-washing underwear is not inherently healthier than using a washing machine.

If hand-washing is necessary, use clean water and an appropriate detergent, rinse the garment thoroughly, and allow it to dry completely.

The most important factors are cleaning, rinsing, and drying, rather than whether the washing was performed by hand or machine.

Similarly, there is no evidence that a particular washing technique can eliminate the risk of cervical cancer.

HPV Can Be Prevented

One of the most important tools for preventing cervical cancer is HPV vaccination.

HPV vaccines protect against several HPV types that are responsible for a large proportion of HPV-related cancers and genital disease.

Vaccination works best when given before exposure to HPV, which is why health authorities recommend routine vaccination during adolescence. Depending on the country and individual circumstances, vaccination may also be recommended for older adolescents and young adults who were not vaccinated earlier.

However, vaccination does not eliminate every possible cause of cervical cancer, so screening remains important.

Cervical Cancer Screening Matters

Screening can detect abnormal cervical cells before they develop into cancer.

Depending on a person's age, country, medical history, and available healthcare system, screening may involve HPV testing, cervical cytology (Pap testing), or a combination of approaches.

Screening recommendations vary, so people should follow the schedule recommended by their healthcare provider or local health authority.

One of the biggest advantages of screening is that it can identify precancerous changes before a person develops obvious symptoms.
