To preserve shrimp’s freshness and flavor for the long term, try these three simple yet effective methods:
1. Store Shrimp in Plastic Bottles
Used plastic water bottles can be repurposed for storing shrimp.
Use 500ml bottles—this size holds just enough for one meal, making defrosting easier and saving freezer space. Avoid large bottles, which are bulky and slow to thaw.
Clean the shrimp thoroughly and trim off the long antennae if needed. Place them into the clean plastic bottle.
Fill the bottle with water until the shrimp are fully submerged. Do not fill the bottle to the top, as water expands when frozen and may cause the bottle to burst. Tightly seal the cap and place the bottle in the freezer.
When ready to use, simply take out a bottle and soak it in cool water for about 2 hours to thaw the shrimp completely.
2. Store Shrimp with Sugar
After washing the shrimp, remove the digestive tract and back vein. Let the shrimp drain completely.
Place the shrimp in a plastic or glass container with a lid. Sprinkle a thin layer of sugar between each layer of shrimp. Be careful not to overdo it, as too much sugar can affect the shrimp’s flavor.
The sugar helps retain moisture and prevents the shrimp from drying out, while also acting as a barrier between the shrimp to keep them from sticking together.
Seal the container tightly and freeze it.
