Sudden or Persistent Stomach Pain? Don’t Brush It Off—Watch for These Signs…
When Is Stomach Pain More Than “Just a Stomachache”? Here’s What to Know…
Doctors warn that some subtle changes in the hands and feet may be early signs of liver disease and should not be ignored.
Many people assume liver disease only causes symptoms such as fatigue, abdominal pain, or jaundice. However, doctors say the body can sometimes send warning signals through the hands and feet long before more obvious symptoms appear.
Because the liver plays a critical role in detoxification, metabolism, and blood circulation, damage to this organ can affect many parts of the body. Certain changes in skin color, blood vessels, and tissue appearance may indicate that the liver is under stress.
One of the lesser-known signs of liver dysfunction is a change in skin tone. Some individuals may develop a grayish, dull, or darker complexion that does not improve with rest or skincare.
Medical experts explain that when liver function declines, toxins and metabolic waste products may accumulate in the body. This can affect skin pigmentation and overall appearance, making the face and skin appear lifeless or unusually dark.
Although many factors can influence skin color, persistent changes without an obvious cause should be evaluated by a healthcare professional.
A condition known as palmar erythema causes the palms to become noticeably red, especially around the base of the thumb and little finger.
This symptom can occur when liver disease affects hormone metabolism and blood vessel function. Increased blood flow to small vessels near the skin surface may create a reddish appearance.
While palmar erythema can also occur in healthy individuals or during pregnancy, doctors note that persistent redness accompanied by other symptoms may warrant further investigation.
Tiny clusters of visible blood vessels that resemble a spider web may appear on the hands, arms, neck, or upper chest.
These marks, often called spider angiomas, are linked to changes in blood vessel regulation. In some cases, they are associated with chronic liver conditions.
Doctors explain that the vessels typically have a small red center with thin branches extending outward. Although a few isolated spots may be harmless, multiple lesions appearing suddenly should not be overlooked.
Yellow discoloration of the skin, eyes, or palms is one of the most recognized warning signs of liver disease.
This condition, known as jaundice, occurs when bilirubin levels rise in the bloodstream. Bilirubin is a yellow pigment produced when red blood cells break down. A healthy liver processes and removes it, but liver damage can interfere with this process.
Jaundice may indicate hepatitis, bile duct obstruction, cirrhosis, or other serious liver disorders and should be evaluated promptly.
Not every change in the hands or feet means liver disease is present. Many symptoms can have alternative explanations, including nutritional deficiencies, circulation problems, hormonal changes, or skin conditions.
However, if you notice persistent redness of the palms, spider-like blood vessels, unusual skin darkening, yellowing of the skin or eyes, or other unexplained physical changes, seeking medical advice is recommended.
Early detection of liver disease can improve treatment outcomes and help prevent serious complications. Regular health checkups, limiting alcohol consumption, maintaining a healthy diet, and managing chronic conditions are important steps in protecting liver health.
