4 Types of "Nasal Congestion" That May Signal a Tumor: Don't Mistake It for a Common Cold and Delay Treatment

In cold weather, some people experience long-term nasal congestion and can only breathe through their mouths, which is very uncomfortable. Dr. Hu Haochun, an ENT specialist from Taiwan, China, points out that many people blow their noses every day, thinking it's not a major issue, and they often don’t pay much attention to it. However, he warns that when the following "4 symptoms" occur with nasal congestion, it means the problem has become serious. At this point, don't delay any further and seek medical attention as soon as possible.

First is “nasal congestion lasting more than 10 days.” He explains that nasal congestion from a common cold typically improves within 7 to 10 days. If the cold is accompanied by nasal congestion lasting more than a week with little improvement, it may be due to a bacterial infection, such as sinusitis. A visit to the doctor is necessary for evaluation, and an antibiotic prescription may be required.

Second is "accompanied by severe headaches or facial pain." Dr. Hu Haochun states that when nasal congestion is accompanied by severe headaches, facial pain, or swelling around the sinuses, it is a typical symptom of sinusitis. When mucus in the sinuses cannot drain, bacteria can grow, causing inflammation and infection. Persistent pain and headaches need immediate attention, as they could worsen into more serious health issues.

Third, special attention should be given to "persistent one-sided nasal congestion"! Hu Haochun warns that this could be related to structural problems, such as a deviated septum or nasal polyps, or rarer issues such as tumors or foreign objects.

Finally, if the nasal congestion is severe enough to "affect sleep or daily life," it could be a sign of issues like a deviated septum, sleep apnea, high blood pressure, or even cardiovascular diseases.

Nasal congestion may seem like a minor problem, but it could be hiding more serious issues. If any of the above problems occur, seek medical care immediately.
