4 Types of Nuts That Seem Healthy but Are Actually Toxic

Nuts are often seen as a superfood — packed with protein, healthy fats, and essential nutrients. But not all nuts are created equal. Some can be surprisingly harmful if consumed the wrong way. Here are four common nuts that may pose serious health risks to your liver, kidneys, and even increase your risk of cancer when misused:

1. Bitter Apricot Kernels

These seeds, found inside apricot pits, contain amygdalin — a compound that converts into cyanide in the body. While some claim they have anti-cancer properties, eating even a small amount can lead to cyanide poisoning. Symptoms include nausea, dizziness, and in severe cases, coma or death.

Warning: Never eat raw bitter apricot kernels. They are banned or restricted in many countries.

2. Raw Cashew Nuts

Cashews sold in stores are typically steamed or roasted. That’s because raw cashews contain urushiol, the same toxic compound found in poison ivy. It can cause skin rashes, allergic reactions, and digestive issues if ingested raw.

How to eat safely: Only consume properly processed cashews from reputable sources.

3. Nutmeg

Technically a seed, nutmeg is often used in baking. In small amounts, it’s harmless — but in large doses, it acts as a hallucinogen and neurotoxin. Excessive consumption has been linked to liver damage, nausea, irregular heartbeat, and hallucinations.

Caution: Use only in culinary amounts. Never treat it as a supplement or recreational substance.

4. Pine Nuts (from certain species)

Some types of pine nuts can trigger a condition known as "pine mouth," leaving a bitter, metallic taste in the mouth that can last for days. In rare cases, contaminated or oxidized pine nuts may stress the liver or kidneys, especially in people with pre-existing conditions.

Tip: Buy pine nuts in small quantities and store them in the fridge to prevent oxidation.
